popestpiusx
If the priest had his authority taken away to say Mass by the Church he cannot consecrate the bread into the Eucharist. God Bless, ironmonk
This is incorrect. If he was properly ordained, he recieved the character of ordinantion, an indelible mark upon his soul, which even the Church cannot remove. This character gives him the power to consecrate bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. This power does not rely on any juridical action of the Church. The priest can execise that power regardless of his canonical status. So if this guy is a validly ordained priest (and met all the other requirements for validity; that is, proper form, matter, and intention) then those people attended a valid Mass, just not one in union with Rome, which would make it illicit. Brother Adam
And so the same excuse that is used to 'prove' the validity of the SSPX mass is now used to prove the validity of those who would altogether leave the Catholic Church. I love it.

I love it.
If you call Church teaching an excuse, then I suppose so. This is very basic sacramental theology. If the priest is validly ordained he can say a valid Mass. In the case of the Rent-a-Priest, it would probably be a case by case thing. But if he has valid orders, and say the Mass with proper form mater and intention, he says a valid Mass. It would be, however, illicit. Very illicit. With the SSPX, their orders are unquestionable, as is the validity of their Masses. It is the liceity of their Masses that is, at the very least, questionable.

popestpiusx
Who's making an excuse for disobedience? Who's being disobedient? No one here goes to Rent-a-Priest or SSPX Masses. What's your point? A fact is a fact. A valid Mass is a valid Mass whether you would like it to be or not.
Brother Adam
Edited to add: You seem to condone rent-a-priest massses btw- I don't like disobedient 'traditionalists' any more than I like those who are disobedient that are not 'traditionalists' be they charasmatics or whatnot. All equally make me very upset. Edited January 17, 2005 by Brother Adam
popestpiusx
For you and Ironmonk to be correct, the Church's teaching on the character of ordination must be wrong.

Am I too assume that you consider me to be a "disobedient traditionalist"? What relevance does this baseless accusation have to the present discussion? We are discussing sacramental theology, not who you do and do not like.
Brother Adam
Yes, what the friggin hell. I never said you are a disobedient traditionalist did I? Edited January 17, 2005 by Brother Adam
