I think my favorite bit of the article is
Lee Breyer left the priesthood when he married a former nun in 1969, yet has been conducting Mass on cruise ships with Rent-A-Priest since 2002. He does not announce to Mass attendees that he's married. "By mentioning it upfront, it can come across as a confrontational issue between me and the Catholic Church," Breyer told The Miami Herald.
Confrontational? How about dishonest, disingenuous, invalid? THERE'S A REASON YOU'RE WORKING FOR RENT-A-PRIEST!!!! AUUUUUGH!!!!! :irate: :shootme: :freak:

toledo_jesus
the passengers didn't sin but I doubt their communion was valid. they've been dealt a grave injustice.

Lounge Daddy
"rent a priest" ??? holy carp - what is the world comming to? i hope no one came to this chump before or after (can i call this "Mass?) to seek the Sacrament of Reconciliation and what a fraud! shame on any company that hires a "rent a priest" - we all know a "rent a cop" is not really a cop... a Priest's legitimacy is a bit more important to a lot of people and shame on any knucle-headed tool that works for this "rent a priest"
Birgitta Noel
Yeah, and Rent-a-Priest is an org that is wholly comprised of married priests, and they have a sister organization called CITI - Celibacy is the Issue. AUGH! Runaway Runaway!!!!! AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH

frozencell
Wow. What a sad, stupid thing. To fake being a priest has got to be so severely and gravely wrong. I've pretended to be a few things in my life, but anyone who does this takes the cake! RENT-A-PRIEST?! All I can say is....wow.
Dreamweaver
I've came across the Rent A Priest website, or one very similar to it (maybe it was the American Catholic church's), and I was disgusted by all they said. Claiming that they were "catholic", that all their sacraments are valid (they especially cater towards marrying people who would be denyed marriage in a real Catholic church by a real priest), but they don't follow any of the rules of the Vatican.... ironmonk
the passengers didn't sin but I doubt their communion was valid. they've been dealt a grave injustice.
Their communion is not the Eucharist. If they think he's a priest - then they're not sinning, if they know he's not a priest, then they are sinning. If he "left" the priesthood, he has no priestly authority. God Bless, ironmonk

1337 k4th0l1x0r
I don't think the sacraments would be invalid, but they would most certainly be illicit. From what I understand, they pretty much give the priest a free trip on the cruise in exchange for saying some Masses. What I don't understand is that they could get in touch with plenty of parish priests who would love to use some of their vacation time that they get each year and go on a cruise. ironmonk
If the priest had his authority taken away to say Mass by the Church he cannot consecrate the bread into the Eucharist. God Bless, ironmonk
