Who wants to convert the heathen?

mulls

Recommended Posts

I really really need to start limiting my time on phatmass (I probly lurk more than I post these days), but I want to stay up on my Catholic knowledge.

I've seen many people in the past offer free Catholic materials to non-Catholics, so I'm calling in a favor and humbly request that you send me anything you have to offer. Cathechisms, bibles, Hahn books, or any other conversion propaganda :P .

If you want to take part in the mulls love fest, shoot me an email at muldoons3@aol.com and I'll give you my address. Thanks.

Oh, and if anyone wants to pick a fight so this doesn't get moved to open mic, feel free :cyclops:

I used to work in a Catholic apostolate that received occasional Bible & Catechism requests for inmates. This was not a mission within the apostolate's budget, but I liked to personally help when I could. Here are a couple of suggestions:

1. The American Bible Society sells inexpensive Bibles and New Testaments both individually and in cases. They do sell Catholic Bibles, like the NAB ($6 per paperback NAB, $57 for 12). [[Their "Good News" and "Contemporary English" versions are less literal, more dynamic translations that I would not recommend for serious adult study, but which can be good with small children and people who speak English as a second language needs. ABS also sells Bibles in numerous other languages.]]

2. I used to visit used book stores wherever I went (Pittsburgh actually had two stores specializing in used Catholic books) and purchase any reasonably priced Catholic Bibles and Catechisms I could find (sometimes for as little as $.50 each). While at it, I'd check for other really solid Catholic books that might make a good companion.

Knowing that inmate access to good Catholic materials is often very limited, and that there can be many pressures from evangelical Protestant inmates, I also did my best to collect other inexpensive but useful materials. I used to collect Catholic booklets, tracts, articles printed from the internet, and old newletters and magazines to send too. Catholic Answers' "Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth" was good. Coming Home Network produced a great Bible & Catechism reading checklist (8.5x14" page). I even took the text of Dei Verbum from the Vatican website and made it into a small booklet.

It's amazing, if you're creative about it, what kind of package you can put together fairly inexpensively!

NB: Since I brought up sending materials to inmates, I should also mention that some prisons restrict materials that inmates may receive. Sometimes magazines and booklets are only allowed, for example, if the staples are already removed. Please be sure, if you send materials to inmates, to call the prison first and ask about any relevant restrictions.

Wow, I had no idea that Catholic used book stores even existed! I'd be bankrupt (and have to buy an extra bookcase) if there were one of those in town. :P

Ok, in all seriousness..
What exactly do you want?
I would have thought that you already have quite a library of Catholic books.
