Q the Ninja
Some words, like the F-word, degrade the actual word below its proper dignity. Sex isn't something that should be thrown around lightly.
cooltuba
However, that is not an appropriate word to be used with a child, if with anyone, and in addition to that, the child himself may start using it.
My point is this: What makes one word so different from the other? If society had decided "butt" was a curse word and the a-word wasn't, it would be perfectly fine to say the a-word to your child. That said, when I do have kids of my own, of course I won't cuss around them. The fact that I don't understand society's picking and choosing of words as either acceptable or unacceptable based on no criteria I can see or understand does not change the fact that those rules do exist. Brother Adam
That said, i have only once heard the S word used for what it is meant to refer to. cooltuba
It is not always the meaning that is taboo. Connotation is very important.
But there are some words that no matter what connotation you are using them, society deems unacceptable. The a word, the s word, the f word, and so on. It's quite a versatile word, and although I'm sure many people do use that word to mean sex, the majority of the times I've heard it used are not referring to sex. hyperdulia again
I have used the F word for sex. 'Cause it's a much harsher, uglier, and honest term for what most people in our society are doing (they aren't making love, they aren't sharing of themselves, they aren't performing acts from hich life can come)
It is the word, not the meaning. By your system, the taboo on nice black man means we could never refer to Africans or African Americans. It is the word that is hurtful, the connotation of the word, not the dictionary entry.

Chris Zewe
I'd respond to MC Just, but his argument is about as holy (it's a pun (a lame one) -- think) as the Pope...
Dave
the f word stands for "fornicating under consent of the king"....lol makes since huh?
Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm afraid that's nothing more than an urban legend. I'd post a link, but the site URL contains the f-word, and even if I don't include the site address but just do something like "click here" or something, the filters still work, the f-word gets changed to "floopy," and the site is unable to be accessed since "floopy" isn't found in the URL. So just go to snopes.com and look up the f-word. Edited January 2, 2005 by Dave
I know how that is. I've had friends who would cuss a lot, especially the f-word, and I soon noticed taht when I was around them I'd cuss more freely -- including saying the f-word.
