JesusSaves1000s
It's not just a word, it's a whole meaning. You get rid of the word you get rid of the meaning. Christmas has already been taken over by advertiser's and gift bearers, but now you want to totally get rid of Jesus Christ on his birthday? It's stupid. The secularists are doing more damage than they think. The secularists also believe they are religions, which they aren't.
Oh it was taken over quite a while ago, around 1200AD, with pagan beliefs and objects incorporated into it, by the 17th century, marketing in Germany and other North European countries had started, by the end of the 19th century, there was a full sale economic market on Christmas gifts [another pagan origin], objects, toys etc. So its not new. Secularism means the seperation of Church and state, and funny-enough, its usually been enforced BY CHRISTIANS! Secularism a religion?
burnsspivey
Learn your history! xmas = christmas. Since X is chi (as others have pointed out) this is a common, old-school spelling that originated with the xtians. Dictionary says:
SYLLABICATION: X·mas PRONUNCIATION: krsms, ksms NOUN: Christmas. ETYMOLOGY: From X, the Greek letter chi, first letter of Greek Khrstos, Christ. See Christ. USAGE NOTE: Xmas has been used for hundreds of years in religious writing, where the X represents a Greek chi, the first letter of , “Christ.” In this use it is parallel to other forms like Xtian, “Christian.” But people unaware of the Greek origin of this X often mistakenly interpret Xmas as an informal shortening pronounced (ksms). Many therefore frown upon the term Xmas because it seems to them a commercial convenience that omits Christ from Christmas.
Phatmasser777
Just a thought: People here are whining about Christmas being taken over but how did Christmas actually come around? Through the destruction of one belief system and replaced by another.
JesusSaves1000s
Your missing the whole point. The unbelievers want to get rid of the word CHRIST and replace it with X. It doesn't matter if it has the same meaning or not.

If christians have traditionally used it in that way, then you're still getting your religious meaning and the "non-believers" are being duped. Fool4Christ
I hate it when they do that. Happy x-mas? Then why not celebrate X's birthday instead of Lincoln's Birthday?
