Birgitta Noel
Ack! I was going to go to Mass at 12:05, but I just realised that my coffee drinking has broken the communion fast. Urgh. I'm stuck right? No way I can receive communion? And it's a 1/2 hour mass so no chance of it being an hour by the consecration.

Birgitta Noel
Auuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh. First I was debating if it would just be a venial sin to receive and then I thought wait a minute that's dumb, I would risk injuring the Body of Christ just because it would only be a venial sin?! DOH, shame on me
homeschoolmom
I had this nightmare that at Easter Vigil as I was going up to receive for the first time, I would swallow my gum and then have to go sit down... but since I rarely chew gum, never chew it in church and never swallow it, I wasn't too worried about it... Duc_In_Altum
Hey, don't sweat it. Nothing sinful about not receiving - especially for a weekday liturgy. You should use this as an opportunity to grow in greater appreciation of the Eucharist. Subtraction is a great way to grow in love for things we dont appreciate as much as we should. I say congrats! - i know it wasn't your original intention but you should know that either way, the liturgy is still a mass. God comes to us through the liturgy of the word also. It's a lot better that you noticed what you did and are obedient, than to receive anyway. Mortal sin aint dope. namuste, -Joe

Balthazor
If you did not intentionally break the fast before communion it is not a mortal sin or anything.....I wouldn't worry as much. I also would not go up to recieve communion, but outside of that I think we all slip sometimes.
Ash Wednesday
You can always take a spiritual communion. Technically a Catholic is required to take communion only once a year -- usually as part of the Easter obligation -- going to confession and then taking communion. Of course most of us don't do that. Though I did meet one Catholic online who did this. It wasn't that he wasn't devout -- perhaps he just didn't feel worthy.... dunno but he did just that. A couple weeks or so ago at Sunday evening mass, I ate dinner late and the priest skipped the homily so I stayed put come communion time. Doh! Birgitta Noel
Thanks guys, yes, I know it's not a mortal sin not to receive etc. And yes, I stayed put communion time. Joe, you're so right, growing in appreciation is something I can definitely work on! In fact I should just appreciate the fact that I can GO to a weekday mass, or to a mass at all! Many of our brothers and sisters are denied this right.
AngelofJesus
All the more apalling when a lot of people deny themselves of this right when it is so available to them.
Piccoli Fiori JMJ
I was listening to relevent radio a while ago... they said that if you do accidentaly eat food within the 60 minute pre-communion time, you can go to the celebrant and ask for some d-word that i can't remember... I guess you could tell him of your folly and that you would like to recieve or something like that... It was a interesting radio show... They also said it you swallow toothpaste, it doesn't count, but even chewing gum in that 60 minutes is considered food consumption because of the sugars coming out of the gum and then you digest them and crazy stuff like that!
