To clarify... I wasn't advocating failing this student. But I think it should be addressed. Frankly, I am not a big fan of mandatory attentance policies in college.

Ash Wednesday
i agree with that last post. rules are rules.  it is unfair to those who actually attempt to follow them, if those who dont follow them dont take the full punishment.

but (to completely counteract what i just said  ) - if for some reason you cant/dont want to give the full penalty (would your adminstrators look down on that?  - ive seen it happen) maybe taking FULL letter grades off.  - but then again, your administrators may not like you for making up your own rules...
Don't worry... the admins give me full authority to draft the syllabus and revise policies as I see fit. I just used the same attendance policy the senior instructor uses -- I went by it because the students need to get used to it.

If I had been here full-time and not just filling in for a quarter, I would probably be more inclined to dismiss her, to send a message that I'm the one running the ship for the program for the year. However, because I am a placeholder of sorts for whoever will be filling the position next quarter, it does complicate things and I don't feel like being someone's babysitter. The other students I warned, I made aware that they were in hot water and they responded accordingly. Again I forgot to warn her, so that's probably the main reason why I'm not going to cut her off just yet.

However if she gives me any krap when we have our little chat -- she's gone.

Right now I don't know all the facts -- maybe she quit the program. We'll find out.
