Ash Wednesday
It depends on what kind of fighting you are talking about. I have practiced the martial arts for years now, and I sometimes help instruct. I realize this sounds corny but the Karate Kid said it best -- Daniel Larusso learned to fight, so he wouldn't have to fight. In a sense, you need to have, be it military or self-defense, some way of protecting and defending yourself. But you need to be smart about it, and make an attempt to find nonviolent means of resolving the conflict. Fighting and war ought to be a last resort. War can solve some problems, but you have to be prepared for the fact that new problems will appear in their place. I don't really view war as a final solution but rather a symptom of societal evils, and one of those things that will be with us until the end of time. I am the first to admit that I am skeptical of how much "pacifism" in the idealistic sense will work with radical muslim terrorists, however. I've wrestled with this, from reading Chomsky to listening to right-wing talk radio and have yet to come to much of a conclusion. They believe they gain eternal life and virgins in heaven for dying in acts of suicidal terrorism -- so in their beliefs, they have nothing to lose. How do you reason with people like that? Thy Geekdom Come
Yes. Fighting solves peace. Stupid peace...
Norseman82
Sometimes bullies will stop bullying only because the people they bully stand up to them. This includes defending themselves physically. So yes, occasionally fighting does solve problems.
Brother Adam
Fighting is odd. For instance: My wife will ask me to do something, I'll say "No", she will say "Now!", I'll say "Make me" and she will procede to beat me up. Then I have to go do what she says because I always lose. You would have thought I'd have learned by now.
