Mark and Luke, what do they tell us?

I've sent this circumcision and Sola Scriptura question in another thread out to many protestant pastors with varyingly interesting responses. Many of them and our good friend Brian have said "well the Apostles had a special gift for writing scripture". Interestingly enough however, only half of the Apostles apparently excercised this gift. But I have been thinking about the other writers of the New Testament. Luke and Mark for instance were not Apostles. What do they tell us about revelation. I think they tell us quite alot really. They were closely associated with Peter and Paul. As far as I know at least Luke never saw Jesus himself. I think they tell us that the Word of God was transmitted to them by these two Apostles (and others) BY WORD OF MOUTH. They wrote some of what they recieved down. It was no less the Word of God because they had recieved it BY WORD OF MOUTH.

Thoughts?
