goldenchild17
Don't quote me on this. I always get in trouble for not giving evidence for my thoughts, but I'll look for some. I heard that the Judea area was actually an extremely light skinned area.

No, not just one shrine, its just one example. I'm from the east coast as well, and I've seen plenty of non-white images of Our Lord. Heck, I've even seen images of Christ where He has dreds like Bob Marley.
PedroX
Wasn't Christ a Nazareane (sp?) like Sampson? This would neccessitate Him having long hair as they took a vow not to cut it. I'm not sure on this, so more info would be appreciated. This would however, explain the long hair in the Shroud of Turin (which I do believe in). Also, most religious art (even new art) tends to reproduce old, familiar images. This way people respond readily to it. Much of the newer art though is targeted to helping people identify with the individuals represented. Thus, you have Black, Hispanic, Asian Jesus images, and even Angels (which probably don't have a racial background!) peace...
geetarplayer
Jesus is portrayed differently in different cultures. In North America and most of Europe, Jesus is white because white people are the majority. In Latin America, Jesus is portrayed as Latino. In Africa, Jesus is black. By the way, I just wanted to say that I really like how African Christians portray Jesus and the people in his company. I saw a painting of the African Jesus healing the paralytic man, and everyone was smiling so wide... including Jesus! :D -Mark
VeraMaria
Especially those pictures with Jesus' heart exposed, on fire, wrapped with a crown of thorns. And please don't tell me that the white skin is a sign of Jesus' purity.
EcceNovaFacioOmni
I don't think Jesus was a Nazareane. They moved there but he was of the clan of Bethlehem. Am I right?
notbilln
Yes you are correct. I think they were in the bethleham area then went to the city for census, fled to egypt then on to the Nazurus place. I think.
Joolye
I had a little Aboriginal girl ask me once, "Was Jesus black or white?" My answer was "I think he was in between." I have thought the area where Jesus came from would look similar to the people that live there today. Is that the Palestinians? When you see them on TV, they are not really of a fair or a really dark complexion. Their hair is usually dark, their skin is whitish, sort of an olive colour, not as white as Europeans. PedroX
Nazarene is different from Nazarite. Nazarite is some one who is from Nazareth (which Jesus was) a Nazarene was someone who took certain religious vows (like Sampson, not to cut his hair) peace...
