Lil Red
Link to CNN
Gonzales has worked with Bush since he was the governor of Texas -- serving as Bush's general counsel, then as Texas Secretary of State before Bush appointed him to the state's highest court. (Gonzales political fortunes tied to Bush's) As a member of the court, Gonzales ruled with the majority that some teenage girls should not be required to get parental permission for an abortion. In his opinion on the ruling, Gonzales wrote, "While the ramifications of such a law may be personally troubling to me as a parent, it is my obligation as a judge to impartially apply the laws of this state without imposing my moral view on the decisions of the legislature."
gee, does this sound like the "personally opposed" double-speak we hear from politicians all the time? :irate: :irate: :irate: :irate: :irate: :irate: :irate:

BLAZEr
Just so you know, there is more to this case than meets the eye. The Texas Supreme Court is pretty conservative, remember, they are the court that UPHELD Lawrence v. Texas, which stated made sodomy illegal. The fact that he was with the MAJORITY in this case means that the case was a little less clear cut than a "pro-life"/"pro abortion" side . . . I don't wnat to defend Gonzalez, I don't know him. I just want to say that we should get all the facts before we make a judgement.

BLAZEr
Besides, and this should be very clear . . . Judges and legislative politicians are TWO VERY DIFFERENT JOBS . . . I don't want judges legislating their own morality or world view from the bench . . . I want them to interpret the legal documents that order my society without reading into them things that aren't there . . . as the Supreme Court did with Roe v. Wade. My politicians are SUPPOSED to help craft a public morality. What they legislate is different than the ways judges interpret. Really, some nuance is needed here in understanding our political system. J.R.D
SO WHAT IF HE IS A "HISPANIC JOHN KERRY"? WHATS THE BIG DEAL MABEY THATS GOOD?
BLAZEr
don't be dumb. It's not good. Back to Gonzalez though . . . He is being appointed Attorney General . . . really, he's not going to have a lot of direct effect on abortion policy anyway . . . Judy Brown is a moron. I wouldn't spend any political capital fighting Bush on every single pro-abort (or seeming pro-abort) he appoints to positions that won't have an effect on it . . . especially since this makes you less credible when we will really need it . . . like Federal appeals court and Supreme Court nominations . . . THink about it . . . why is CNN making a big deal about this now? They know that this is a red herring . . they aren't trying to help the pro-life side . . . they are trying to make Abortion the issue EVERYTIME so that it becomes increasingly polarizing and irrelevant . . . Watch . . . you'll see what I'm taking about.
