Some Reasons Why the Pope Is Tired

10/6/03

As the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's pontificate draws near, it is useful to reflect on some of the reasons why the Pope is tired:

• Number of Trips Outside of Italy: 105

• Number of Trips Inside Italy, Not Including Rome: 142

• Visits in Rome and Castelgandolfo: 726

• Beatifications: 1,314

• Canonizations: 472

• Number of Nations Visited: 135

• Number of Cities Visited: 604

• Number of Addresses Outside Italy: 3,430

• Number of Addresses During His Pontificate: 20,341

• Number of General Audiences: 1,218

DOCUMENTS:

• 14 ENCYCLICALS

• 13 APOSTOLIC EXHORTATIONS

• 11 APOSTOLIC CONSTITUTIONS

• 42 APOSTOLIC LETTERS

• CATECHISM

• Number of persons who have attended his general audiences: 16,930,200

• Total duration of all his trips: 541 DAYS, 18 HRS, 25 MIN

• Total traveled kilometers: 1,400,607 (This is 28.3 times around the world. It is 297 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.

• First Pope to ever visit a synagogue (Rome, April 1986)

• First Pope to visit a mosque (May 2001, Omayyad Great Mosque of Damascus)

• Held press conferences in airplanes and one in the Holy See Press Office (January 24, 1994)

• Published books of prose and poetry

• Stayed at a hotel instead of residing in the apostolic nunciature during his travels (Irshad Hotel in Baku, Azerbaijan, May 2002)

• Added five new mysteries to the Rosary (October 2002)

• Celebrated Mass in an airplane hangar (December 1992, Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Airport)

• Called for a Day of Pardon (Jubilee Year 2000).

This Pope is an example for all: Children, Youth and Adults, sick and healthy. He keeps going to let others know the Love of God for the world.

On his last trip to Bulgaria, he was asked if he will step down, and he answered:

"IF CHRIST HAD STEPPED DOWN FROM THE CROSS, I WOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO THE SAME."

Pope John Paul II has asked the world to pray for him. Prayers give him strength for whatever God has prepared for him.

Could you help him with a prayer?

Wow, I just love JPII. I think when he passes away I'll cry. For joy that he is in heaven, and for sadness because we here on earth have "lost" him in a way. (Of course I know he will be praying for us in heaven, but at the same time it will be sad not to have his physical presence here... if that makes sense....)

The Holy Father is such an inspiration to me. I have been asked by a friend of mine who is a priest studying in Rome right now to pray a daily Rosary for JP2, especially during this month of October. It is the month of the Rosary and is the final month of the year of the Rosary. I would ask you all to join me in doing the same. The Holy Father has quite literally given his life for us, can we not give him 15 minutes a day?
