well I think I explained this on my reply to the previous topic...but allow me to again talk about myself!
I came to orthodoxy through the efforts of a few people who I now count among my closest friends.
However, my parents are a mixed bag. My father converted to Catholicism this Easter and being a lawyer naturally began to read Canon law...and the more he does the more orthodox he becomes. Mom on the other hand...not so much. She's the type that give the whole "oh you're so young and stupid, you'll learn when you're older" attitude. I hate it. Seriously. I never thought that my own mother would irritate me that much, but somehow her ignorance and her apathy just get my goat. I think it's because she is a CCD teacher. It's gotten to the point where I can't focus if I'm at Mass with her. I just look at the smug self-righteous expression on her face and keep reminding myself that she supports abortion, contraception, women priests, and all that stupid garbage.
So...my orthodoxy opened me up to a whole new set of sins. I cannot talk to my mother without breaking a Commandment. Mostly I just avoid the discussion of religion. Kind of smells of elderberries. However, being orthodox I have the tools to combat my new sins, so it's worth it.
No offense toward your mom, bu if she supports all that stuff, then why is she teaching CCD?

a question I have asked her. she provided no good response save that she doesn't teach her views, only the curriculum.

I once asked her when she was going to make it official and become an Episcopalian...I'm a terrible son. :(

EcceNovaFacioOmni

It started during puberty when I went on a hunt to get some questions answered. I found the Catechism and Catholic.com.

I was basically raised as a cafeteria Catholic. When I was growing up, my father wouldn't go to Church much but my mother did. They believed in abortion in cases of rape and they disagreed with the Church on some issues. I really wasn't into religion much through the eighth grade. I would go to mass out of habit but I really didn't enjoy it. To this day, I'm not sure whether I was morally culpable for my lack of interest, I was never really a bad kid or anything, I stayed out of trouble and stuff. But I had a very good theo teacher in 8th grade. I guess my faith really started coming when I was a freshman in high school and I went on a confirmation retreat. Since then, my faith just started growing. A few things helped my faith. First of all, I went to a Catholic school in 6th grade basically because my teacher in 5th grade was a living nightmare. The atmosphere among the students in high school was decidedly unchase, etc., but I kinda found my own belief that it was totally the right thing to do to save myself for marriage. After a while I just grew in love with God. I mean, it has totally been a work in progress kind of faith journey. And now my family kind of sees me as the religious one? Ack...it really bothers me because they don't go to church much, my Mother hardly ever goes at all. :sadder: I dunno, I just keep praying for them.

That's nothing. Once I told my non-Catholic mom that she might go to hell for being pro-abortion. So if you're a terrible son, I'm far worse than you.

Hey, I told my mom she might end up in Hell too!

To which she promptly replied, "Oh Neal, it's all just rooms in the same house."
Whatever that means. :(

Hmmm.. Your mom quoted CS Lewis "Mere Christianity."

Interesting... Your mom likes to read? Get her some Scott Hanh, baby! Or some CDs from www.catholicity.com. They're free.
