update on my daughter

Well, my daughter had "activity day" at our parish in prep for her first confession... (which is Nov. 14). I had to practically drag her there... she cried all the way to church... However, I got her inside and convinced her the day would be fun. She cheered up when she saw her one and only Catholic friend and her mom. So, the day went well.... she even went along with the "practice" confession when they take each kid one at a time and talk to them... "Now the priest will do this..." Then we went into the confessional and saw that room...

She's still says she doesn't want to do it (and I won't make her), but I think in the end she will. If you think of it, please pray for her. She's rather resistant to the whole "becoming Catholic" thing anyway, and this certainly doesn't help.

PS. I spoke to our priest and he said that if she wants to have him, he will make sure that she gets to see him. He said that for most Catholic kids, this isn't that big of a deal because they're raised this way. HSdaughter, of course, wasn't... and I am having a hard time explaining the need for confession when she is used to just praying and saying she's sorry to God. (kinda complicated for an 8 year old....)

Wow...even if your daughter is wrong to be afraid or resistant (not that she is wrong in any way implying guilt), it's awfully intelligent for an 8-year-old to comprehend and appreciate the difference in difficulty between just saying a prayer and going to Confession.

Does she see the full value of Confession and how essential it really is in balance with how much harder it is?

You have my prayers. ;)

Yeah, maybe so. She realizes how ugly it is to have to tell someone else (even if he is acting the place of Christ) about your sinfulness.

The thing I was really disappointed about in the prep day is that they failed to connect the dots. They did the story of Zachaeus and how Jesus forgave him and he repaid all the stollen money four-fold... and talked about making sinful choices etc... But they failed to explain to the children why the priest can grant absolution... (I think it's a pretty big leap to ask the children to make without instruction!) So, on the way home, we talked about how scandlous it was for Jesus to go around forgiving people... and how since He's God, He has that authority. But then we talked about how Jesus passed that authority to the apostles... (they sorta left that part out during the day... <_< ) So, I think she's okay... We'll see... We sorta compared confession to giving your soul a bath. I think that made sense to her...

Getting her to participate in First Eucharist prep will be much, much easier... ;)

Yeah, it is very ugly and it's very intimidating. I hope she'll see that the more we pour out whatever is wicked in ourselves, the more room we will have to hold the holiness of God.

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out a visual for her... sort of an oil and water thingy... I have it in my head, but I have to try it out...
