We've dealt with the same bank for many many years, way back when my grandfather did huge business with them while his cattle business was really big. So they know the family and we've been with the same back forever. That's why I can't figure out why they didn't notify me on what happened.

Did you cash the check and put it in or simply deposit the check?
It makes a difference. Always cash it first.

If someone stops payment the bank has to immediately notify you.

I deposited it  And they said it cleared and everything was fine and that the money was in my account now. Then I went and paid my insurance, and that check cleared. Now four days later my account is showing that I'm over $1,000 overdrawn because the Uni stopped payment on the check. To learn what exactly had happened with me being so overdrawn we got a print out of everything that had gone on in my account. And there on the sheet it said that the Uni had stopped payment on the check. We have a feeling this didn't just happen to me either. The Uni's phone lines have been busy all day long, and normally it is never like that.

yes my account showed it was in my account if the money had not been in my account I would not have been able to pay my insurance.

Well, I met with the accounting services person at my Uni earlier this morning. They did in fact cancel payment on my check because there was an error on it, though she didn't seem to want to tell me what the error was. I told her that I never received a call saying that the check would be stopped so I went ahead and deposited it. And that four days later the stop payment thing on the check took place. I also told her that I had to use that money to pay for my insurance and etc. And now because of the error from that check I'm now overdrawn over $1,000. All she said was " Well, all I can do is call the bank and see what we can work out" <_< I wanted to tell her that the Uni better work this whole mess out because the fees and everything coming along with that overdraft mess definitely aren't going to be paid by me and I'm definitely not paying for the fees on any bounced checks. If my insurance check is bounced it'll cost me a whole lot more to redo my insurance. My Uni better get this mess figured out.
