More People Trying To Ban Halloween

speaking of haunted houses, i know some churches have HELL Houses that depict things that are sinful and the fire and brimstone that comes with it. What do you guys think of those. I think there's a right and a wrong way to evangelize, and that's not necessarily the right way to do it, if not a completely tacky way of doing so. On the other hand, it's kind of like showing picture of aborted fetuses-the world won't know the consequences of sin until they actually see the Consequences of sin (or at least a depiction of it). I don't know.

but back to the issue at hand, now that i think of it, i guess halloween does incite some curiousity in the devil, the dark side, or sinful things (like an excuse to have wild parties with drugs, people getting drunk, and orgies, ect). But i guess it depends on how seriously you take the holiday, i mean if you're just in it for having fun, candy and dressing up then it's cool, but if you're getting into it with occult stuff or animal sacrifices and it suddenly inspires you to convert to Wicca, then we might have a little problem here, and may have to take you to the church's haunted house.
Holloween is a pagan feast day at worst; and at best, just plain stupid.
i thought that it was, or started as, a celebration of all hollows eve?

We were looking at Christian alternatives to Halloween for our parish.

Online we found tons of Bible-only churches stuff: Judgement houses, hell houses, revelation walks.

They're sick. One of the tips to doing a hell house was to buy some meat that could represent an aborted baby.

That's not Catholic, man. TRUTH in LOVE.

It's Your kindness, Lord, that leads us to repentance.

Yeah, I don't like the idea of hell houses either. You kinda have to break people in before you shove it in thier face.
I kind of thought of it that way with The Passion of the Christ; I didn't think it would convert many people because it was just so graphic; although, it really depends on the person's mindset.
People who would see hell houses and The Passion while already knowing about it would probably get more out of it than someone who had never heard of this guy names Jesus before, or who had no idea what abortion was. But then again, all depends on the mindset of the person...

anyways... just a li'l pondering...

The hell house thing is taking it a little far. That won't convert people...it'll just prove to them we're complete nutcases. Our parish in RI used to have a Light of the World party on Halloween Night. We'd get tons of candy, and there were games and activities. We won our first goldfish there. :)

Personally. I think Halloween's harmless. It's a night where kids dress up and go out in public in silly costumes to stock up on candy. Anything beyond that is reaching.
Halloween "should stay banned because it does offend some people," said Allie Scholtz, a junior high school student in the district. "It's not a big deal. You're just missing out on a couple of parties."
But wait....banning Halloween offends other people...so it should stay unbanned, but that still offends people....so it should be banned....my head hurts...

I love Halloween! My dad always makes chili and invites all of our neighbors and friends, so we have, like, four crockpots! And they always bring a dessert, like brownies or cookies or something. All my friends come by (in costume, of course) and we have an awesome time! It seems to me that people are making Halloween into something that it shouldn't be. Halloween should be about getting together and having a good time.

I wholeheartedly agree. It's about camaraderie. It's about fun.

I am not a huge Halloween Fan, but two years ago I spent Halloween, All saints and All Souls Day in Krakow, Poland....

It was an incredibly moving experience. While the polish really do not celebrate Halloween much..they really celebrate all Saints Day on the first of November...

The whole city shut down, not only that but the holiday is so special that the trams and buses have different routes for that day to accomodate all the people who are going to the cemetary.

Naturally I went to the cemetary, Krakow has a very, large very, famous cemetary called Rakowicki cemetarz........it was soooo beautiful I was stunned at the atmosphere. It was dark and there were thousands and thousands of candles on all the graves,....and in the grey and wet of a November dusk there was a profusion of flowers on every single grave. No one was forgotten on that night, evrywhere there was soft candle light shining through, red, yellow, green and blue glass.

This is very holy and solemn time of year for families to remember and pray, and remember loved ones and ancestry. Something like 98% of the population goes out and visits graves that day....it is just amazing really.

I suppose that while I like Halloween, I like all Saints and All Souls day more. On that cold dreary eve seeing all those people, hearing mass, feeling the memories and prayers that hung so thickly in the air that day just reminded me that we Christians are people, not of death and demons, as Halloween has become, but the people of the resurrection and of hope.

If anyone wants to look here is a website about it...although the pictures really don't do it justice at all. You really have to be there to capture the moment.

Peace, may God bless you all,

Balthazor
