First off, I just want to say that this poll is not for people who deny the validity of any of these liturgies. If you think any of these liturgies are "objectively inferior" to another, then please do not vote or answer. For the rest of you, I'm just asking which of these liturgies feed you the most spiritually, and which you've found the most beautiful. I've only been to the Novus Ordo, and I think it's pretty. I've seen parts of the Divine Liturgy on EWTN, but I can't vote in this poll because I'm sure the experience would be different if I attended in person. I thought it was beautiful on EWTN, though.

Oh, by the way:

NO = Novus Ordo
DL = Divine Liturgy
TM = Tridentine Mass

God bless,

Jen

I grew up with the NO Mass, but have started attending the TM within the past few months. I LOVE that Mass...it seems that there is sooo much more reverence at the Tridentine Mass...and I love receiving the Eucharist while kneeling.

I've been to all three, and I have to say that they are all good. A properly done N.O. is wonderful. However, Divine Liturgy and the Tridentine Mass lend themselves to more reverence. I prefer the Tridentine purely because incense sometimes makes me woozy...and anybody who's been to Divine Liturgy certainly knows what I'm talking about :D

oh yeah and cause I can't sing... :(
i've only been to NO, unfortunately where i live, there is not any choice in the matter
That's too bad. There are a few Eastern Catholic parishes in Rhode Island. I'm dying to attend the Divine Liturgy. In a few weeks or so, I might attend a Melkite Divine Liturgy, and I absolutely can't wait. I think there's a parish that has the Tridentine Mass, but I'm not sure if it's an indult Mass. Obviously, I wouldn't go if it wasn't approved by the bishop, so I hope it is. I'd love to go to the Tridentine Mass.

I'm always pretty baffled when people criticize the Novus Ordo. I like it a lot. It's so beautiful in its simplicity.

God bless,

Jen
Pardon my ignorance........ what is the Divine Liturgy?
It's what Eastern Catholics (and the Eastern Orthodox) call their liturgy. The Divine Liturgy is different from the Mass in a few ways:

1.) Leavened bread is used, and in the Byzantine Churches, people receive the Eucharist from a spoon. The Eucharist is immersed in the Precious Blood.

2.) Only icons are used. The alter is behind something called an iconostasis, which is a big icon wall with doors at the front. The priest comes out of the doors with the Eucharist. The doors are called the "royal doors."

3.) The Divine Liturgy tends to be a bit longer than the Mass.

4.) Eastern Catholics aren't supposed to kneel at the Divine Liturgy.

5.) There's much more singing and chanting in the Divine Liturgy. I think the whole thing is sung.

6.) Eastern Catholics cross themselves from right to left and do so at the Divine Liturgy.

7.) There are several litanies in the Divine Liturgy.

There are more differences, but that's all I'll list for now.

God bless,

Jen

Well, there's no iconostasis at the Tridentine Mass. Unleavened bread is used, whereas leavened bread is used in the Divine Liturgy. Statues can often be seen at the Novus Ordo and at the Tridentine Mass, whereas only icons are used in the Divine Liturgy. The liturgical language in the Tridentine Mass is Latin. Nowadays, Divine Liturgies are often in the vernacular, but each Divine Liturgy has roots in Greek, Syriac, Russian, etc., and sometimes parts of the Divine Liturgy are conducted in one of these languages. People kneel during the Tridentine Mass, but kneeling is not part of the Eastern tradition, so people aren't supposed to kneel at the Divine Liturgy. The Rosary is part of the Latin tradition, so it's not used during or after the Divine Liturgy.

Again, I'm sure there are more differences, but that's all I'll list for now. I hope this helps answer your question. :)

God bless,

Jen

I have never been to a DL but would love to go.

I have gone to a NO Mass and a TM, I think that both are very beautiful. However I voted NO Mass because I am able to understand and participate and know what I am doing in it. I also grew up with it so it is more familiar to me.

Hi slywakka250,

I forgot to answer this before, but yes, you can attend whatever liturgy you'd like. If it's a Tridentine Mass, you'll have to find out if it's an indult Tridentine Mass. You can attend the Divine Liturgy if you'd like, and you can receive Communion there as well (provided you're in a state of grace, of course).

God bless,

Jen
all of those rites have Jesus in them.. doesnt that make them divine in itself? :confused:
Ha! Of course! :)

Divine Liturgies are gorgeous! I like all the Masses, but have not seen a Tridentine Mass that can compare with the best Novus Ordo Mass I've been to..
