How I Fell In Love

It was such a subtle flirtation, like something out of one of those old, old love stories. He was always there in the shadows, watching, arms open and waiting, but always the gentleman.

I had fallen hard before, trusted too soon. I can be a bad judge of character... this, combined with an endless stream of coffee and late nights, makes me more than a little edgy, but the understated passion left no searing flames for me to flee. One whiff of smoke, and I would have been running again.

Oh, how much I hated Him when I was younger, but that never stopped Him. If only I could spend infinity contemplating the depth of His mercy and love.

It was the little things that did me in. He got me with a slow burn.

What is it that St. Augustine said?

Late have I loved Thee, O Beauty so ancient and so new, late have I loved Thee! And behold, Thou wert within and I was without. I was looking for Thee out there, and I threw myself, deformed as I was, upon those well-formed things which Thou hast made. Thou wert with me, yet I was not with Thee. These things held me far from Thee, things which would not have existed had they not been in Thee. Thou didst call and cry out and burst in upon my deafness; Thou didst shine forth Thy fragrance, and I drew in my breath and now I pant for Thee; I have tasted, and now I hunger and thirst; Thou didst touch me, and I was inflamed with desire for Thy peace.

I can't figure out when it happened... there was no blinding flash of clarity, as happens to some. One morning, I woke up, and I was in love. I didn't stand a chance.

That is truly beautiful, Sanvean. :)

I know what you mean by being in love. I once asked an atheist friend if they had ever been so rapturously in love, in that way...
