Did anybody ever own a turtle?

My neighbor found one walking down the sidewalk and brought it to me. Its about 8 inches long and has a yellow and green shell with a pattern like lighthouses. It has yellow red marks behind its eyes and doesn't seem to bite. It is currently residing in a tote on my dining room table and my daughter named it Sasquatch.

What are its living requirements :space, light, heat, food?

They need some space (not alot--for a smallish turtle a normal sized aquarium is fine)

They don't need special lighting.

They will need a heat lamp, especailly if you live in a colder climate.

Depending on the turtle, they'll eat lettuce or meal worms. I'd talk to a local reptile shop owner.

I remember someone gave one to my brother- it was right before Star Wars: Episode 1 came out- he named it Darth Maul. It wasnt doing too well in our captivity, though, so we let him go.

Turtles are awesome.

Kilroy the Ninja

The baby Ninja Crusader has two turtles. Sounds like you have a Red-ear slider on your hands (that's what we have). We have ours in a 10 gal aquarium with a floating dock and a normal lamp for them to bask in. They need the dock so they can dry out a bit, and they love to bask under the lamp. Which, btw is just a normal gooseneck desk lamp over the top of the aquarium. We also have a screen over the top to keep out the curious child and cats.

We've got about two gallons of water in the bottom of ours, but with the dock, they have somewhere to rest.

Your little guy should be fine in the tote for some time.

The best advice I can give is to go to the pet store and find someone who knows their retiles, and take a look and see (on the internet perhaps) if you can confirm that your turtle is a red-ear. That will help too. Also there's a bunch of good websites on the net (google 'em).

Don't feel like you have to deck out your turtle all at once. But do be sure he's warm enough.

Have fun! They're cute!

Boil some milk, add some carrots, onions, garlic, celery.... [/quote]
Soup! Yummy!

Mr?Mrs? Sasquatch Box Turtle has a new home in the lower 15 acres of one of my friends yard. I read online they are going extinct because so many people keep them as pets and they can live to be 100. He will probabkly outlive me by a good 75 years

So.. Long life to you Sass! :)
