last year, a bunch of my friends and i dressed up and went trick-or-treating for canned goods for the local food pantry...it was a blast.

kinda flipped people out though...#1 b/c we were refusing candy (people just couldn't quite get over that) and #2 b/c we did it the week before Halloween....but it was lots of fun :D

I celebrated Hallowing every year growing up.  My parents even dressed up to give candy and the neighborhood kids were always scared to come to our door because my parents would scare the hell outta them.  And that was my moms hope.  With every bag of Candy she would put a little note:  Halloween is make-believe but witches and demons are real.  Good girls and boys have nothing to fear, by calling on the name of Jesus!

It was her way to evangelize on Halloween night.  I also remember that we used to have an "All Saints Party" with other Catholic families.  We would dress up as our favorite saint or someone from the bible and have a little party with Cake and candy, and games . . . it was great.

now that is SUCH a great idea!!

wow! our parish is planning on having a halloween festival with lots of stuff for the kids on the church grounds to keep themoff the streets (streets are dangerous)

and that is such a cool idea to do for halloween!!

thanks blazer can i borrow that? or does your mom have it patented?

let me know okay! :D

Welcome back, Raven and Clover.

Long time no see...

For some of our newer posters here, Raven and Clover are of the Wiccan religion.

Regarding Christians celebrating on "the devils high feast day," it's actually more likely that the devil is attempting to inflict as much evil as possible on a high holy Catholic Day--a Holy Day of Obligation which honors all the noble Catholics who ever lived on earth, and now reside in heaven with Our Lord. How he must hate this day, when we celebrate all the souls who escaped his snares! We celebrate Christ's promise of eternal life, and triumph over sin and death!

The following day, November 2, is the Feast of All Souls, where we remember the souls still detained in purgatory, awaiting entry into heaven. These souls have been judged and not condemned to eternal fire, but need to be purified before entering paradise.

My parish Respect Life Committee used to sponsor a beautiful All Saints Day party on Halloween Night. It was a good preparation for them to better understand the Holy Day of Obligation that they'd be attending Mass at the following morning. While trick-or-treating exhausts kids running door to door in the evening air and getting stuffed with sweets, the All Saints Day Party (or All Hallow's Eve Party) helped them to get in the mood to honor the Saints.

The children came dressed as their favorite saint or Bible character. They played fun games such as Pin the Halo on the Angel, Liturgical Chairs, A target game of David & Goliath with a big poster of Goliath. (The five smooth "stones" were actually made of cut up nylon stockings, stuffed with poly fill, and were tossed at Goliath's forehead, which had strips of velcro across it.) There was the Fishers of Men fish pond, where you climbed into a "boat" with a cardboard Jesus and tossed a fishline into a prize box, also, guess how many rosaries in the jar, Assemble the scrambled commandments, and many other fun, faith-filled activities...One year, each child was given a goldfish to take home, as the fish is the symbol of Christianity...All the parents volunteered to make it a successful fun time for the kids, and we all donated the snacks, candy and prizes. We gave out Jesus Loves Me erasers and pencils, miraculous medals, prayer cards, and some toys and stuff, too.

If I had a scanner, I could show you pics of Ice Princess as St. Elizabeth of Hungary, and Temple of Vesarius as Juan Diego. (I made the tilma myself ;) )

Yes, you can really incorporate a lot about your Faith into a nice, safe party.

You don't have to worry about checking the candy for needles, razor blades, or drugs. You don't have endure peeps trying to frighten your children. You don't have to knock on doors where witches and frankensteins open the door, or where dummies stuffed to look like dead men hang from the tree in the front yard and skeletons decorate the windows...You can celebrate the promise of heaven and dress up like some of the Peeps who are already there!!!!!!

The party got so big that we had to move it from the K of C hall to the local Catholic School gymnasium.

Oh, I almost forgot the best part!

Toward the end of the party, our pastor or parish priest would drop in and would bless all the children with holy water. We'd get them to settle down and sit on the floor. Father would chat with them a bit, asking them, 'Which Saint are you? etc.' It was a lot of work, but hopefully, a lot of fun for the kids.

Last year, I took the kids trick or treating. No one puts the effort into throwing the party any more.

I saw a video a few years ago made by some former Satan worshipers who had become Christians.  They were against Hallowing for the simple fact that on that night in some witch covens and among devil worshipers there is a lot of sexual abuse and physical abuse that goes on against children to give homage to the devil.  He thought it was very un-Christian for Christians to celebrate this night as a party when the dark side of it is that its a feast day for those who honor the devil and that its a day where abuse of chilrdren is glorified.

Maybe to the satanic Religion, in case you didn't know, pagans are really nothing but a bunch of tree-hugging-passifists to put it very bluntly. We don't celebrate abuse or harm of others, in face the only solid "golden" rule in Wicca is "An' it harm none, do as thou wilt!" I think it's horrible that satanic cults do that... and any "pagan" coven you here of doing this aren't true pagans.

Halloween/Samhian/All Hallows Eve which ever you call it by, it's just another holiday, why would it be evil for you to celebrate when you only partake in it for fun, and you aren't hurting anyone?

Kilroy the Ninja

All Hallow's Eve is a wonderful time of celebration and rememberance of those who have gone on before us. (Hence All Souls and All Saints days).

Maybe it's a throw-back to my wiccan wonderings, but to me it's the REAL end and beginning of the year. I always feel renewed this time of year.

I believe Halloween should be celebrated with joy and abandon. People who consider it "evil and wicked" should re-evaluate the level of fun in their lives.

We did a haunted house for over 10 years and had a wonderful time. THe little kids could sit in the Pumpkin Patch and we would take everybody else thru our old school building. Every family and teenager in the parish was involved and we raised thousands for Make-a-wish and other charities.

Halloween is what you make it. A good sense of balance is necessary.

Remember to have a cake on November 1 for all the Saints in heaven, and prayers for all your family gone on before on November 2, All Souls Day.

Umm I know a few ex-Wiccans and pagans and I know from them that there are many dark sides to Wicca, despite the "no harm none, do as thou wilt" philosophy. Be careful, you can never be quite sure if the "god" your talking to today wasn't the devil of 100 years ago.
