Thy Geekdom Come
Mr Roche's point is that we must address the crux of the problem. destroy their reasoning for getting an abortion. help them avoid the situation entirely instead of its consequence.
Fr. Edward J. Flanagan, founder of Boys Town, gave the reasons for his efforts to the attempt to stop child delinquency at the crux of the problem, but he did the immediate good first, i.e. taking them off the streets so they could do no more damage, and then worked on their character values. Boys Town is a highly successful example of this order of operation in remedying social evils.
Ash Wednesday
I'm too tired to get into this one. 1.) It's an article from the New York Times. 2.) It comes from a Dean at Notre Dame. 3.) Contrary to popular belief, Catholics really are not a "voters bloc" anymore. We are no longer solidly unified with our beliefs, so we will never be unified with our vote. I think the press is outdated in how they perpetuate this idea. So, respectfully, I'm taking that with a salt lick from a cow pasture. Let the debate about formation of a correct conscience begin! On your marks, get set, go! *pow* God bless.

Ash Wednesday
I did read it. The "Catholic vote" is a farce and the press is wasting their time. But I guess they needed something to provide a story about. A more accurate description is the "Americans with differing political and religious views who happen to be baptised Catholic" vote. smeagol
he's still not talking about "the Catholic vote" as an aggregate.

Ash Wednesday
he's still not talking about "the Catholic vote" as an aggregate.
It seems to heavily implicate as such. That's my interpretation, anyway. I mean, if you're "voting your conscience and not your religion", then how is one really voting as a religious group? You're not -- at least not how a lot of Catholics in the 21st century view conscience. Most don't view the two as one and the same. To me the way the press speaks of Catholic voters applies more as "Catholics" in a cultural or ethnic sense, but not in the religious sense.
Oh, I dunno. All I know is that my hackles get raised when people talk about "Catholics voting" because people have different interpretation of it. And I don't believe in splitting faith from conscience. That goes back to "formulation of a correct conscience" But I'm too tired to go there. If someone else wants to help me out, someone who has more sleep on their eyes. I think I best be taking a nap and then I just might come back to it later. I'm just egghead babbling. smeagol
yeah, you're agreeing with him, because he says to vote your conscience. which is what you plan on doing, because it is one with your faith. thats what i'm doing to. vote for your conscience instead of what appears to be the "Catholic vote" because that is just an illusion. one's conscience however intangible, is no illusion. smeagol
Ash and I agreed that there is no single aggregate Catholic vote. every fiber of my being dictates that i vote my conscience, my mind, my faith. and that's what i'm doing. even if it's not the supposed "Catholic" vote, for that is merely an illusion. Ash Wednesday
Okay now my head is somewhat clearer -- I agree that we vote our conscience, however we are obligated to form a correct conscience. I think that is the issue I have with what he is saying about conscience. Catholics misunderstand what it means to formulate a correct conscience with the magesterium as our guide. Good night everyone. I'm going to go watch 80s videos on VH1 Classic and relax my tired mind.
