justfran
Well I have family there, so if, say, my grandma is dying or something, then of course I'd go! But I wouldn't go there for an extended period of time. To me, Communism is not ALL bad - there are bad aspects of it, eg it is atheistic, totalitarian and stuff like that - I wouldn't vote in a Communist Party - but it's supposed to focus on the poorer classes, and material ownership doesn't get you far, which I guess is probably among the only good things. How long does the student ambassador program last? Edited October 9, 2004 by justfran
drewmeister2
not sure how easy it will be to attend a Mass, that would be my main concern
Actually, there are many state-run Churches there (they are Catholic, and have the actual Body and Blood of Christ, but don't answer to the Pope). As far as I know, you can go to one of these Masses, and receive Communion (check on that first, though). I dont know how long the program is, but it can't be more than 30 days, as the government doesn't let visitors stay longer than that. I went to Beijing in March, and I loved it. It is a perfectly safe country, probably safer than America, because you will see armed soldiers everywhere, and police everywhere. There is probably still alot of crime, but the large police forces help make it safe. I enjoyed it. I went with a government tour agency. It was kinda funny, as the bus was bugged. But oh well. Maybe if America would start bugging buses, we could prevent 9-11. Who knows. I would definately go. If I ever get the chance to go again, I would love to go. Really cool place. Be prepared for some weird food, but there is also things like Pizza Hut (at least in Beijing), McDonald's, and other American food. The hotels are pretty Westernized, so dont be scared to go. Hope you get to go. God bless.
smeagol
i dont see any reason not to go... the likelihood of getting killed as no more than it is here... keep in mind that you have the opportunity to go. not everyone has that chance. i am learning chinese now and plan to study abroad there 2 years from now. my plans as of now are to become an analyst of Sino-American relations... but that's neither here nor there. this thread is about your decision to go to China... so go!! most definitely. if the cost is not too exhorbitant, it's not even a choice. Iacobus
You wouldn't be able to attend Mass or even pray in public or be found with any religionous stuff. SARS is mostly over but could spring up again, but it looks like the bird flu made the brid-human jump last week. So that might be a problem. Also China does have a problem with Kidnaping and forced prosutition. But I don't like China, so I am probly anti going basised.
hopeful1
actually, i one of my old teacher's from my catholic high school is currently teaching in shanghai (sp) at an international christian school. I think it's some kind of international teaching program for teachers where you teach in a different part of the world for 2 years, and the rent is paid for and she gets free lessons in manderin. she's catholic too. I got her email address from her, but apparently it was the wrong one. but i can go back to my old school and get it. I'll try to email her soon and ask her about china for you, voici! Cesar624
GO TO CHINA! I would LOVE to go to China. Beautiful country with a beautiful culture. Go and have a great time. And to even THINK about contracting SARS would be one of the most ignorant things ever. China is a country of 1 BILLION people, the odds of you catching a deadly disease are pretty slim. :: sarcastic look :: You are so lucky to have this opportunity - don't you dare pass it down. YOU'RE NOT GONNA GET KILLED! Give me a break! You have a better chance of getting killed in NYC than getting killed in China. I hope you go and have the time of your life. God bless. But maybe not necessarily in public. I wouldnt worry about forcible rape, it is just as illegal there as it would be here. You are probably safer there, at least they arent the most hated nation in the world! Even if they were hated, they have such a strong military force, unlike America that says, oh no, we can't have soldiers with guns walking around because somehow that violates people'e rights, and would rather see us get blown up than violate our rights. Dont worry about SARS. It isnt a threat. I went in March, when it was still a threat, and I was fine. Definately go. They have a very cool culture, and there is so much history. You will love it. voiciblanche
I'm still torn... Anyways, it may not end up being a problem. I might not be able to afford it.
Guest T-Bone
Go to Cuba instead... Cuba has just as much culture, plus Castro is not anti-Catholic (although he is a Communist). You're not "really" supposed to go there, but if you go to Canada, Mexico, Germany, England, France, Poland, Czech Republic, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, Italy, Finnland, Sweden....first, you can get a flight for cheap. Guest T-Bone
I'd have listed ALL the countries you can fly to Cuba from, but the list is too long. Neglecting those countries without international airports, I can only think of one (1) country that doesn't have travel to Cuba...
Guest T-Bone
I'll let y'all guess as to whether or not I'm for the Cuba embargo!

DemonSlayer
I'm pretty the Eucharist wouldn't be valid in the state-run Catholic churched because the governemnt at least ordains the newer priests. Otherwise, just skip Mass if you can't find an underground church or don't want to risk being arrested/persecuted. Personally, I would'nt want to support the country.
