It dates back to 1594 and was carved out of wood by an Indian from the Matara tribe in the actual province of Santiago del Estero, Argentina. This Cross is a profound symbol of the evangelization of the culture- the specific aim of our Institute- and of the great apostolic work accomplished by the Church in these lands. In a specific way it reminds us of the relationship between two exemplary Spanish missionaries and the Indian people of Matara: Father Alonso de Barzana, a Jesuit, who preached in the region of the Matara tribe and is known as the apostle of Peru; and St. Francis Solano, who missioned more than six years in the territory of Argentina, from 1590 till 1597. On the Cross of Matara, Our Lord and the Blessed Mother are engraved. The two most important aspects of the Servants of the Lord's spirituality. Jesus is shown crucified, and we wish this wisdom-the wisdom of the Cross- to characterize our lives. (1 Cor 2, 2). THE SYMBOLS ENGRAVED ON THE CROSS The Cross of Matara was engraved with a catechetical intention. In fact, in it you can find the central mysteries of our faith: God's work of creation, indicated by the sun and moon. Christ, true God and true Man: here you can see Christ crucified; in the upper part there are two Greek letters, Alfa y Omega: Jesus Christ, who is the Beginning and the End (Cf. Apoc. 22, 12-13). The Virgin Mary, Co redeemer. The mysteries of the life of Christ: · The Incarnation and the Nativity: the comet - symbolizing the star of Bethlehem, · The Redemptive Passion: the rooster that reminds us of the triple denial of Peter; an Indian praying; the fire that represent Purgatory; the instruments of the Passion: the whips of the Flagellation, the crown of thorns, the hammer and the nails; the ladder used to take the body of Christ down from the Cross; the spear that passed through Our Lord's heart; the dice which the soldiers played to divide his robe. · The Eucharist: represented by the Host and the Chalice. · The Church in its three aspects: military, purgative and triumphant; the Lord, invisible Head of the Church; the Blessed Mother, the neck that unites the Head with the Body; St. Peter, the first Pope, symbolized by the rooster, the visible head of the Church and the Vicar of Christ on Earth; the faithful lay people, represented by the Indian who implores prayers that may help him get out of Purgatory, which is represented by the tongues of fire. (Does anyone know where i can get one of these?) Totus Tuus, Andy

StColette
Oooh Awesome find Andy !!! I've never heard of the Cross of Matara before !! Many years ago, the first catechists, didn't know the language of the natives, and they have the necessity of transmitting the t From that time we have a beautiful legacy, which is the Cross of Matrá. It is a size carried out in wood of "mistol" tree , and it has the essence of the Catholic doctrine. According to an inscription in the superior part, it would be of the year 15. From the artistic point of view is very beautiful with its stylized figures and it supposes is carved by the natives under the direction of the missionaries that there worked. Its celebration takes place in Matará, a town that is 130 km from the capital city and it congregates to people from the the surroundings and from very distant places in order to thank the Good Jesus of Matará. Salespersons arrive the previous days to the party and they conform a colored landscape that contrasts with the green and ochers of the santiaguinian landscape. Its celebration is in September 14th ,the day of the Exaltation of the Cross.
