Guest Aluigi
and if you did, did you bury a statue of St. Joseph upside-down in the back yard? Edited October 7, 2004 by Aluigi
Mateo el Feo
Yes and no. Yes: I've sold my house. No: I wouldn't bury an upside-down statue of St. Joseph in the yard. Wacky superstition...
DemonSlayer
I heard about that on Thursay at CAFE (CAtholic Faith Exploration).
WillT
Yes, we sold our hose, but no statue was used. My dad actually just prayed the St. Joeseph novena and it worked perfectly! I will post the story and novena if anyone is interrested, so let me know!
IcePrincessKRS
Why would you bury it UPSIDE DOWN? That seems... off kilter...
HomeTeamFamily
hahaha funny you should mention that we are currently in the process of trying to sell the house that we have been renting (we being my parents)......my mom bought a statue and was gonna bury it but i told her not to cuz its just a wacky superstition....and that prayer would be sufficient.......i acutally took the 4 inch statue out of the box and set it up on the window sill next to the little statue of mary...it was cute anyway, i think its kinda stupid to believe in that kind of thing.....almost falls into the category of the occult.....and plus, why would you want to bury a statue of a saint in the ground!!!! come on people..... Guest T-Bone
If it was damaged beyond repair, I'd bury one.
Guest Aluigi
read this: http://www.irregardless.net/degage/stj_ljs.htm apperently, you're sposeta dig it back up afterwards and put it in your new house. i think it's a cool tradition, and would do it if i ever had a house to sell. PedroX
I have sold two houses, and buried the statue each time. It really increases a devotion to a wonderful if much ignored Saint, and it focuses you on praying for the sale of your house. The statue now sits on my bookshelf at seminary. Nothing wacky or superstious about it. Certainly not anymore wacky than scapulars, rosaries or images of the Sacred Heart. peace...
popestpiusx
But why bury it? It just sounds superstitious. I'm not saying it is, it just seems to be.
IcePrincessKRS
I understand praying to St. Joesph for the successful sale of your home, but I still don't understand why you'd bury him upside-down. Even just burying him doesn't make *great* sense to me (though I can see why some people do it), but the upside-down part really gets me.
Mateo el Feo
My local Catholic bookstore actually has a little "instruction sheet" at the cash register encouraging people not to bury statues. I think they've got it right. I think this "devotion" is more focused on the selling price (that would be Mammon) than a way to honor to this holy saint. Keep praying to St. Joseph...just forget the shovel.
Guest Aluigi
you know what, i think it'd be awesome to pray while digging a hole. and there aren't many times i get a chance to pray while digging a hole, so if i ever sell a house i'm doin it! it's just a practice that goes along with praying. it's not dealing with mammon so much, for not only can you pray for the successful sale of your house, pray that the next house you have will be a good home for your family, and that a good family will find a nice home in your house, and that this will all transpire quickly so you can get on with this big change in your life peacefully... there's nothing wrong with it in my humble opinion. HomeTeamFamily
right if the devotion to st joseph is a part of the "ritual" with the statue.....why is burying it a part if you are still going to pray....which is the more real part of it anyway? Guest Aluigi
if you're gonna pray anyway, why hold beads in your hands? if you're gonna live chastely and prayerfully why wear a scapular? if you're gonna think of the saints anyway, why have statues to remind you of them? it's just a neat little thing. there's nothing wrong with it. it's simple and devotional. you're connectin with St. Joseph by doin work with your hands (digging)...
