Thy Geekdom Come
Okay...so the local Newman Center has FOCUS missionaries and mine knows his basic apologetics, but his theology and philosophy isn't very deep, so he has me there to answer deep questions. Well, yesterday, only like 3 of 8 people showed up, so the topic was postponed until next week. It was Jesus: True God and True Man. So, partly out of fun and partly out of interest, I'm going to spend the time until our next meeting researching and writing, oh, a 15+ meditation-style thesis on the hypostatic union, its relation to Theology of the Body (Church as Bride of God), and refutations of the related heresies. The heresies are the tough part...I'm not all that good with Church history... Would someone mind listing all the heresies s/he can think of relating to this subject and, if possible, giving me the links?
phatcatholic
the New Advent article on the Incarnation lists many of the ancient heresies regarding the divinity of Jesus, the Incarnation, and the hypostatic union:

Modernism: "The Divinity of Christ is not proven by the Gospels but is a dogma that the Christian conscience has evolved from the notion of a Messiah. It may be taken for granted that the Christ Whom history shows us is much inferior to the Christ Who is the object of Faith" (see prop. xxvii and xxix of Decree "Lamentabili").
In his "Thalia", Arius taught that the Word was not eternal (en pote ote ouk en) nor generated of the Father, but made out of nothing (ex ouk onton hehonen ho logos); and though it was before the world was, yet it was a thing made, a created thing (poiema or ktisis). Against this bold heresy, the Council of Nicaea (325) defined the dogma of the Divinity: of Christ in the clearest terms: "We believe . . . in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, generated of the Father (hennethenta ek tou patros monogene), that is, of the substance of the Father, God of God, Light of Light, True God of True God, begotten not made, the same in nature with the Father (homoousion to patri) by Whom all things were made" (see Denzinger, 54).
The Gnostics taught that matter was of its very nature evil, somewhat as the present-day Christian Scientists teach that it is an "error of mortal mind"; hence Christ as God could not have had a material body, and His body was only apparent. These heretics, called doketae included Basilides, Marcion, the Manichaeans, and others.
Valentinus and others admitted that Jesus had a body, but a something heavenly and ethereal; hence Jesus was not born of Mary, but His airy body passed through her virgin body.
The Apollinarists admitted that Jesus had an ordinary body, but denied Him a human soul; the Divine nature took the place of the rational mind.
