Guest Aluigi
defide.org he will stand trial for heresy. but they're prolly waiting till after the election so as not to look like they're trying to affect the election. if he is convicted in ecclesiastical court he will most likely be given a penance that demands he publically apologize and ammend his ways or else he has excommunicated himself from the church and should begin to act accordingly (by not claiming to be a Catholic in good standing) Edited October 6, 2004 by Aluigi
EcceNovaFacioOmni
His actions have merited excommunication but I would advocate the Vatican giving him an ultimatum first. Sort of what they did to the six women who were "ordained" last year.
Iacobus
Hi all, who here thinks that Kerry should be excommunicated because of his views on Abortion and Stem Cell research ?I know I do . Thanks God Bless, Ricky.
I don't speculate on the nature of his soul. Or wish excom on anyone. That makes me ill to think desirably of someone being removed from the Church. The goal of canon law is not to split but to heal. Rember that.
Guest Aluigi
i think this ecclesiastic trial will be a good thing for kerry, and i hope he gets convicted and then follows the penance given him by the ecclesiastical court (this is all assuming he is convicted and given the penance of public apology and public announcement of a resolve to amend his ways, public scandal demands such a penance) anyway, that's my best case scenario: he's convicted in ecclesiastical court and opts to repent rather than excommunicate himself. popestpiusx
I hope they do, for his sake and for the credibility of the Church. However, if they do, they better start lining up the politicians (and maybe a few bishops too).

Ash Wednesday
I was thinking of this the other day. If Kerry took the White House (which I still don't think will happen at this point in time) this would make for a very interesting, very public showdown with the Vatican. As acting president in a pro-choice position and in poor standing with other moral issues as a Catholic, the issue of him taking communion would be more up front and center. drewmeister2
I dont feel he should. No one should ever be excommunicated, because that keeps him from ever coming back to Christ. Maybe he shouldn't receive the Eucharist, but if he later repents, even on his death bed, if he isn't Catholic, he can't receive absolution, and that endangers his soul, possibly, even though he may be truly sorry. I think it takes much more than this for excommunication (I see it as the death penalty of the Catholic Church, death for the soul, that is). I think the best thing to do is pray for him. If we come across as this Church who is some kind of big political jerk, and since the Vatican is the head of the Church, they can do whatever they want, and just come across cocky, I personally, if I was in his position, wouldn't want to be Catholic anyways, if the Church is like that. Rather, we need to love him, and maybe instead of excommunicating him, pray for him, and send theologians to show him how his views are wrong, and maybe he will then repent, and change. He is less likely to repent if we come across as a big bully, rather than as a loving brother or sister. He is a brother in need, and we need to act as loving brothers and sisters, to help him come back to Christ. We have to be careful in not getting caught up in all the politics of this.
