Guest Aluigi
i hope this is alright with phatcatholic. hughey took on the challenge and requested a new thread cuz that was just discussion and stuff. Anyway, I will be taking the side of the Protestant. Please note that I do not believe what I argue, I am just challenging in order to produce a good Catholic response. Hugheyforlife will play the Catholic Apologist trying to refute me. The Eucharist. here i'll start off as if i'm protestant, and someone try to refute me and stuff, then i'll try to refute you, we'll go from there. Jesus spoke symbolically when He said "this is my body" and "this is my blood". He was clearly teaching them a lesson. the passover bread he was showing was the bread of affliction, He was merely telling them that He would have to suffer afflictions. He said the cup of salvation was His blood, so that when they saw His blood spilt, they would connect it with the passover covenant and understand why He died. It was a teaching metaphor, nothing more. He told them to do it in memory of Him, so they would be able to teach the other Jews about what Jesus' sacrifice meant as well. In fact, we need not even do the same thing anymore, because it has no significance to people in today's culture. it was meant to show them the ordinariness of faith, and the fulfillment of the passover. to show the ordinariness of faith today, we should eat cookies and drink milk. to teach the fulfillment of the passover, we should simply tell them the parallels between the Jewish passover and the sacrifice of Christ. only if today people were already well versed in the customs of the Passover service and ate bread and wine regularly would we need to still have a recreation of the Lord's Supper. refute me... phatcatholic
aluigi, are you wishing to only engage one person, or can anyone chime in? if only one person, then i have designated hugheyforlife to be your opponent.
Guest Aluigi
i donno.. maybe anyone can chime in... then i'll get the full experience of what it must be like to be a protestant coming on to phatmass.. but the title speifies hugheyforlife cuz he was the one that wanted to take it on. just let anyone respond if they have something to say, just like i was a protestant posting this in the debate table. franciscanheart
sigh.... i withdraw i really wanted to do this as a private debate so that i could learn how to better defend our faith alone. in the crusade i never get a chance to get a word in edge wise so i am not learning a whole lot. i want to better my own skills when talking to protestants and have the chance to do so without being able to rely upon other people as well. either way is fine with me. its not a big deal. but if its open i withdraw and im more than happy to watch Edited October 5, 2004 by hugheyforlife
phatcatholic
i'm ok with making it a one-on-one debate. actually, lets do that. Aluigi vs. Hughey. other people can chime in only once she specifically asks for help. sound good? holla back, nick

[/quote] I would suggest against this, since Laura is still learning to debate more efficiently, I don't think it would be a good idea to overwhelm her with a lot of different people acting as "Protestants" and debating 50 different directions with this one topic. hehe just looking out for my lil sis God Bless, Jennie Edited October 5, 2004 by StColette
