Well, if you want to go to a seminary, you have to be sponsored by a diocese or religious order...you can't just go without feeling a vocation.

Also, you rarely get much of a choice where you go. I was forced to go to one seminary in particular and decided to go instead of just leaving formation. I ended up leaving formation anyway.

St. Gregory the Great in Lincoln, Nebraska and the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio are my favorites that I've visited.

You can go to any diocese you want. All you have to do is get the bishop of that diocese to allow you in or "call you" to his diocese.

Also, don't dismiss the religious orders. The thing about those is that if the bishop doesn't like the order then he won't sponsor you (which means you foot the bill yourself). So for instance, if you tried to join the FSSP from Evansville you would recieve no support whatsoever. But some of the orders have ways of helping people afford it and some churches have fund raisers. St. Alphonsus in Baltimore (the traditional parish) adopts a seminarian from the FSSP and then takes up collections for him to help pay the seminary costs.

Just a couple things to keep in mind.
