ForHimAlone
OK, I thought it was something along those lines. I'm currently reading a book on the History of Habits, and it's just fascinating! I'm really feeling pulled toward a Cistercian monastery right now, so I just wanted to see if anyone had any knowledge about the meaning of the habit. bookin'it
Did a little more research and found that the white habit is worn as a novice and then after profession of solemn vows the Prioress clothes the sister with the cuculla (choir robe) and black veil, signs of her Solemn Consecration to God. She is then crowned with a wreath of white flowers.
argent_paladin
The Dominican habit (for men) has changed a bit since the thirteenth century. The scapular and capuce were once one piece. Now they are two. Also, the rosary didn't become required until a revision in the constitution around 1902. Here's a pic of me in my habit: You can see why I think the men's habit is the best there is. The cape (cappa) is awesome and it is very versitile. But the black and white is very eyecatching. And of course, having a rosary at your side and a scapular given to the Order by Mary herself is a blessing.
Piccoli Fiori JMJ
I'm still deciding! I'm between Franciscan and Carmelite... hmmm...
Susan
I think the Friars began wearing the Rosary around the 1500's. Did you know that as the early friars began lengthening their capuce, St. Dominic was NOT happy with their vanity! Still, they won! This is why the friars have a cape to their capuce and the nuns don't wear a cape. Everyone thinks that the nuns are not wearing the cape because they modified their habit. Not true. The Dominican Habit is the best...
Piccoli Fiori JMJ
I went with the Franciscan Habit because of it's orginal intention: Poverty and Penenance... I'm a big fan of both...
