They might support the UN's anti-poverty campaign but I doubt they support the organization as a whole. The UN is a persecutor of Christianity. Didn't we just recently have something posted here about the UN using dissident Catholic groups in an attempt to undermine the Church's efforts against abortion and contraception?

support of their efforts and good intentions yeah.

but the UN is very currupt and does much evil in the world.

and you can see the Pope didn't support an international tax imposed by the UN. just the idea of helping the poor and feeding the hungry. those are all good things, but a UN imposed tax isn't gonna be the best thing.

i may be wrong on this, but didn't switzerland recently join the UN? And didn't that leave only one nation that is *not* a part of the UN? And wasn't that ONE country that refused to join the UN known as The Vatican?

Of course . . . I *could* be totally off base here . . .

Peace,
Joe :)

just checked on the switzerland/Vatican thing, and yes, the Vatican is the only free nation in the world that has not joined the UN. UN Member Nations
Just to rear my ugly head, didn't both the pope and the bishops step up in SUPPORT of the UN.
Hmmm . . . i'm not so sure about the ugly head thing . . . but if you *say* it's ugly i guess i'll have to take your word for it . . . ;)

i'd guess that they didn't really support the *actions* of the UN, but rather what it stands for. *Everyone* supports what the UN *says* it stands for: Freedom, civil rights, and justice. These are definitely good things.

The trouble is *not* with the theory of the UN, it's with the practice. In practice, the UN is a an organization that encourages abortion and birth-control. They really don't *do* much, other than condom-distribution, better than anyone else.

They provide humanitarian aid, but the Red Cross does that better.

They provide 'peacekeepers,' but every time their peacekeepers enter a country, the country is either already stable, or someone else comes in to clean up the mess. (Generally speaking, we could replace 'someone else' with 'the USA.')

That said, i'm *not* against the UN. I *don't* think we should get out of it. It's a good organization, with a great thought process behind it. We just need to change it from within. And until we *have* changed it from within, i don't think we should give them any more power than they already have. Allowing them to levy taxes is *WAY* too much power for an organization that answers to no one.

I think the only thing that keeps them in check at all right now is the fact that the U.S. pays most of the bills for the U.N. I shudder to think what they would do if they weren't worried about keeping the lights on.

Peace,
Joe :)

The UN has permanent observer status at the UN. They can't vote, but they definitely are there. So they are in the UN, but are not a member.

Also, they won't admit Taiwan because of the whole China thing.

right, but that means that they don't have to submit to any UN decisions. Honestly, that's prolly the best way to go. You don't have to pay for the bad stuff, but you can throw your weight (and if you want to, your money!) behind the good stuff. And you can always advise the nations that *do* vote. :)

Peace,
Joe :)

If you want peace, work for justice.

And that starts at home, right here.

I challenge anyone to literally sell all they have & follow Christ.

Start small. Start with the video games, CDs, movies, etc. Start with your old pairs of shoes that you haven't worn since last year. Start with the clothes you used to fit in & are saving until you lose the weight you've gained.

Start small. Finish big. Let's put our $$ where our mouths are.

Man, that's why we're losing so many battles. Ghandi said they he would have been a Christian if it hadn't been for the Christians. Let's be loud. Let's be poor in materials & rich in spirit.

The Pope would love that. And would Mary. And would Jesus.

Take up your cross!
