fmjag06
I just moved down here to florida and due to the hurricane, we could not attend morning Mass, so we elected for the evening Lifeteen mass at a nearby parish. Surely going to Mass is better than not going, even if not considered a sin to do the hurricane. Having only been to a lifeteen mass once before, I had a vague idea of what goes on differently, but a better idea from reading here about the various conflicts in thought. The Mass progressed in what seemed to be normal, and I enjoy a good mix of older "classic" church songs and newer songs such as Jesse Manibusan's "Open my eyes Lord", so I did not have a problem with the music at all. The first sign of "trouble" came when it came time for the Eucharistic Prayer, as the "Holy, Holy, Holy" began, I saw people approaching the altar -- definately not what I was hoping to see. Then, as it was time to kneel, the lights went out; the only lights left on were those directly above the altar. I turned to my mom next to me, wondering if perhaps the power went out. However, I tried to ignore the fact of what was happening, and to focus on what was happening. Finally, as the end of the Mass came, I knew what was coming. As the people began to go on about how the Mass must be lived (a rough paraphrase I admit) I said Thanks Be To God. I got a few looks, but after Mass an older man came up to me and said "Thank you, I now have hope for the Church's future." That statement was quite a blessing for me. I did not even see him during the Mass around me, but his words made me feel good in spite of the looks I recieved. This was a chance event that I went to this parish, as just moving here 2 months ago, my family "registered" (I hate that term) at a parish, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, but due to the hurricane, we went to this other parish. Perhaps the only hope we have is that October 1st in next weekend. I just might pay a visit to the lifeteen Mass next week to see if the changes are made. Otherwise, I am strongly considering writing a letter to the pastor, bishop (if anyone can point me to the Archbishop of Miami, i would be thankful), and anyone else that should be included. Does anyone feel I am justified in my reaction? I hope I am not making a bigger deal out of these things than they need to be. Matthew
Ash Wednesday
I would write to the archbishop if the changes aren't made. The lifeteen program across the country was told to take out the altar gatherings and the "mass must be lived" -- our parish has done just that. I'm still not big on lifeteen but it's a little more tolerable. That's strange that they turned off the lights. That makes it sound like they wanted it to be a Broadway production. Thy Geekdom Come
Ash is right. You should write the bishop.
geetarplayer
LifeTeen is something the Vatican and even this site both promote. We all know what was and in some cases still is wrong with it. You're beatin a dead horse here. -Mark
Theoketos
I do not think that we are beating a dead horse, because this is a hot issue. I want Life teen to be good, but I honestly wonder if it has many tenants which will make it impossible (already proven extemely hard) for it to be Orthodox. What does orthodox mean? Right priase to God. Some times I think wonder if that is possible through lifeteen. As far as the Vatican promoting, I would say rather that they do not object whole heartly against it. And while many at phatmass promote it, I have yet to see dUSt whole heartly endorse it...I could be wrong about that, but this is a big deal to me. HomeTeamFamily
i think this truly is beating a dead horse because if you search for how many topics have been about this subject, you will find it is more than plenty.....we all know that LT is supposed to make changes by Oct 2.......so why are we complaining before then the search feature is easy to use and a bit of reasearch would have shown that it has already been beaten into the ground sorry for the rant, this topic is getting a bit old though
rachael
well, i am a lifeteen lover myself. we have already started to do away with the "bad" stuff at my church. does that make you happy?
fmjag06
Sorry, I probably should have waited to next week to bring it up. Also, I did search and read the results prior to posting, particularly when it comes to the lights being off. Has anyone had experience with the lights being turned off during the Eucharistic Prayer/Our Father? Even in talking to friends that attend LifeTeen weekly, no one has seemed to have seen this before. I think that without the 2 key things I mentioned, I would be a "lifeteen lover" as well. HomeTeamFamily
at our parish, they dim the main lights and really illuminate the altar space in an effort to highlight the altar during the consecration.......i do not think it is done as an effort to be insubordinate to Rome or whatnot, but rather an aid to help people focus on the Eucharist. its similar to a spotlight on the tabernacle while no one is in the church
Ash Wednesday
Nobody is beating a dead horse. He is asking for advice regarding his experience, and what he should do if what has actually been forbidden continues to be done.
geetarplayer
To answer your question, our parish does dim all the lights but the ones that shine on the altar during the consecration for the LifeTeen Mass. By the way, I'm sorry that I was so hostile. No hard feelings? -Mark
rachael
well i think we need to wait and see for a while. then if it continues, we can discuss the issue again
fmjag06
Mark, no hard feelings. I understand completely where you are coming from. I noticed in the hurricane thread that you are down here as well -- Hope everything is going well for you. VoloHumilisEsse, That logic does make sense; I think the biggest thing was just not experiencing it before, leading me to question if it was a widespread practice or something this particular parish did. Thanks to all who gave input, I will make an effort to attend the LT mass next week to see if any changes occur, and I will make it a point to speak with either the man in charge of LT in the parish or the pastor if the changes were not implemented. My parents have said they don't have a preference among the 3 local parishes (they registered in the parish we did to allow my younger siblings to get into R.E. this year), so I will keep an open mind on St. Andrew's here in Coral Springs. toledo_jesus
you all realize that October 2 is next weekend? If these changes haven't been implemented now, that means they don't want to make them. Why wait to implement the changes? This is not a dead horse, because it appears that some people aren't taking the abuses seriously.
