Carrie
When a person (who is a baptized Catholic but has not been practicing) receives Last Rites by a priest before death, does that person go to heaven when they die? I believe that's the case if the person turns to God, even at that last moment. But what if this person received Last Rites just because he knew he was dying, rather than because he came back to God. Does he still go to heaven then?
cappie
It would depend on the contrition of the person being anointed. If the person being anointed is conscious the priest can hear the persons confession as part of the anointing. If the person is unconscious then one can presume that there is sorrow and go ahead and anoint I wolud add humbly relying on the mercy of Almighty God. But Canon 1007 says that the anointing of the sick is not to be conferred upon those who obstinately persist in a manifestly grave sin.
