gonzaga
Did you know... that a Catholic cannot be King or Queen of Britain, by law. Shockarooooooony or what?
yiannii
That's why Prince Phillip had to convert from Greek Orthodoxy to Anglicanism in order to marry QEII. Not just Catholicism - only an Anglican can be King or Queen in Britain. I have heard that there are plans to change this law.
Ellenita
It isn't just the king or queen, it's any member of the royal family who might be in the line of succession so even the minor royals, distant cousins etc who might succeed if all the others were wiped out, are not allowed to be Catholic. Anyone who converts or marries a Catholic, aside from seeking the queen's permission, has to formally give up the right to the throne. There is no such ruling concerning any other religion or protestant denomination so technically, although unlikely, they could marry someone who wasn't Anglican and still succeed. Since most of the formal state occasions are tied into the Anglican church however it might be difficult....this presumably is the reason why Phillip converted. There are no plans to change the situation regarding Catholicism and the position of the royal family - it would mean a constitutional change and the dismantling of the established church. There are plans to alter the laws regarding general religious discrimination however since at the moment it's unlawful to discriminate on the basis of some religious belief and not others - interestingly it is not unlawful to discriminate against someone because they are a Christian, the assumption being that this wouldn't happen anyway as the UK is a Christian country.......though we might debate the point now! gonzaga
Tony Blair has called for it to be changed, but nothing has been done about it by anyone. The prime minister himself is not a catholic, but wife and kids are, and he has been seen going to the cathedral a few times alone, so there is speculation to whether he is or not! Hopefully! FiZzGiG
Well, there goes my chances to marry Prince William. I'll have to find a new beau. Preferebly Catholic and with an accent. I am technically of a royal bloodline, though. All Irish people are, lol, because of the way the clan system used to work. Each clan (large extended family) was a minor kingdom and so all the clansmen were related to the king and a part of the royal family, lol. Then the kings would meet at Tara with the High King over all of Ireland.

Actually, men and women were surprisingly equal in ancient Ireland, but the king was always in charge, not the queen.
Where did you see that he has called for it to be changed? He certainly was seen on his own during the Mass in Westminster Cathedral but when the Archbishop of Canterbury wrote to him saying that it didn't look good that he as Prime Minister, was appearing to be drawing close to the Catholic Church, he replied that he was waiting for his family who were delayed and arrived after the Mass had started. Excepts from the letter were published in the Catholic press in the UK some time ago. He has been asked - I think by the Cardinal, though it may have been a Bishop - not to receive the Blessed Sacrament when he attends the Mass with his family. He was reported to say that he didn't think God would mind him celebrating communion with his family, but that he would respect the views of the church.
Well, there goes my chances to marry Prince William. I'll have to find a new beau. Preferebly Catholic and with an accent. Royalty would be a plus too...
Don't give up hopes.....their grandmother, Frances Shand Kidd, the mother of Diana, converted to Catholicism. She played a significant role in rasing funds for a Catholic church to be built in one of the islands off Scotland. Both William and Harry were said to quite close to her so maybe, just maybe in the future......
