Br. Augustino
I have been thinking about this for awhile, and was wanting to bring it up. I think slang is slang and you cant get rid of it, or more accurately I cant get it out of me . I think people need to keep it real, but at the same time "1 Corinthians 9:22 - I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. " So I can see some people adopting slang to reach any given group. Personally, I just talk and people understand one way or another, but I am not going to say" WHERE MY DAWGZ AT" from the pulpit during a parish mission. I DO believe that we should ponder the origins of some slang terms and purify them from vocabulary. By this I mean slang with negative roots. I have my ideas of what some of those are, but I wanted to see what people thought first.

Thy Geekdom Come
Dude, there ain't nothin' wrong with the slangy lingo, it's jus' dope! As long as it doesn't lead to sin, I don't see a problem with slang.
reelguy227
I kind of agree with Raphael ,but I kind of dont . God should be spoken of with reverance ,not slang ,it just seems disrespectful.
Socrates
Depends on what you mean by "Christian culture." I think that in formal contexts, such as preaching from the pulpit at mass, it's best to avoid slang, but in informal discussions at can be ok - more a matter of prudence than morality. Just so long as no "dirty words"or words with impure connotations are used -this is should definately be avoided in a religious contest. Also if you try to use slang that you would not normally use just to "sound cool to the kids" or something, you'll just come off as ridiculous or "dorky." And speaking of God irreverently would be sin, which, as I noted, I would disagree with.

cathoholic
Nizzle my dizzle with the double shizzle. When speaking about God we ought to show respect, in any other context I say go ahead dawg. It just doesn't sound right... did anyone else hear snoop call God "the greatest mac of all" in Starsky and Hutch?
MichaelFilo
If slang is part of how you speak, and the life you live, then it can't be irreverant, as it just so happens to be the only thing you know. Speak to God normally, he listens to everyone. If you aren't being vulgar when speaking to God (or much of anyone else) then slang cannot be bad, as we are all apt to speak in the way we are raised. Example, Jennie says ya'll, but I don't think God would mind. So thats my .02 God bless, Mikey
HomeTeamFamily
i think yes but filtered for example, it would not be appropriate to use slang during a homily or other formal church event however, in our lifeteen program, we are taught to meet them (the teens) where they are. we cant use all the technical terms and such, we gotta sort of make it easy for them to understand, so if part of that means using the occasional slang word, then i dont see a prob with that i vote yes but filtered
FutureSoror
I think that those words that are technically slang, but are ingrained into our vocabulary are ok, for the most part, but that slang can sometimes be degrading, and should be kept to fun stuff. God deserves something more reverent, refined, and respectful. Just like we dress up to go to church, it deffinetly couldn't hurt to dress up our speech a bit for God too. Iacobus
I don't use slang at all. I think it is a threat to our exisitance as humans. Use of the non word ain't should be a high level crime.

Dont get me wrong I studied my brians out for two years to learn Latin- i love it, but if the Gospel does not interact with the culture then it falls mute- says JPII. And guess what? This culture speaks English!
