Bring Back the ‘Drawbacks”
In our society today there are many people who consider themselves amoral. Along with amoral people, there are also immoral people. Every so often there is that one person who holds high moral values, even when they go against popular belief. With this said, the topic, which has become a breading frenzy for immoral acts, is pre-marital sex. Pre-marital sex has almost become an act that is accepted by society; however, this does not justify it as moral. Pre-marital sex is an immoral act. It is no longer a shock when you hear about someone having sex before or outside of marriage. To most there are only two drawbacks to this act, STD’s and pregnancy. Society has found a way to limit these ‘drawbacks’, and that is through contraception. It is through contraception that pre-marital sex is promoted and accepted. Contraception promotes pre-marital sex, pre-marital sex is immoral, and thus, Contraception promotes the immoral.
The word contraception can be broken down into two parts, according to Merriam and Webster’s dictionary they are, “contra- + conception.” Contra means “against or in opposition to.” The second part of contraception is the word conception, which means “the process of becoming pregnant involving fertilization or producing life.” The word contraception means “against or in opposition to producing life.” One may recall the two ‘drawbacks’ of pre-marital sex as being STD’s and pregnancy. By breaking down the word contraception we see how the one ‘drawback,’ pregnancy, is taken away by the usage of contraception.
Now that one ‘drawback’ is out of the way, there is only one left standing in the way, STD’s. According to the official website for the Planned Parenthood of South Central New York, “Latex and polyurethane condoms protect against sexually transmitted diseases.” It states that, the condom is 99.7% effective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases. Now this still leaves a .3% chance that someone in the act of pre-marital sex can contract a sexually transmitted disease; however, a .3% chance is not a large enough percentage to prevent someone from doing something. This proves that contraception virtually prevents STD’s from contracting during sexual intercourse, and ultimately showing how the second ‘drawback,’ STD’s, is taken away by the usage of contraception.
Now, to the immoral eye, pre-marital sex no longer has ‘drawbacks’; it is no longer viewed, by the immoral eye, as dangerous. Without ‘drawbacks’ or danger present, what will prevent the immoral person from having pre-marital sex? Nothing!(sf) This is exactly why contraception is accepted by the amoral and immoral person. To the amoral or immoral person, there appears to be not one thing wrong with pre-marital sex when contraception is used. However, without contraception, pre-marital sex becomes dangerous and scary due to the ‘drawbacks’; even the amoral or immoral person would rather have nothing to do with it. It is now that the promotion of contraception jumps into the scene.
Not only does contraception promote pre-marital sex, but also there are many people who promote contraception while viewing pre-marital sex as immoral. According to a gentlemen in the “JC Youth Forum, “PEOPLE UNFORTUNATLY WILL HAVE SEX OUTSIDE OF MARRIAGE. Deal. That being said, why not have them protect themselves from getting AIDS, or gonorrhea or other STDs by using contraception/birth control.” This is a good thought on the surface; however, by doing this you are telling that amoral or immoral person that pre-marital sex is ‘safe,’ not dangerous. By doing this one is promoting pre-marital sex, and by promoting pre-marital sex one is promoting immorality. It is logically impossible to promote contraception and view pre-marital sex as immoral, because promoting contraception leads to promoting pre-marital sex; ultimately leading to the promotion of immorality.
