VeraMaria
WOW I can’t even say what I felt when I was reading these threads…just such a deep gratitude that I have friends who care about me so much. Seriously. Thank you thank you thank you for your prayers, and please pray for those who are getting the storm worse than we did. Well, as for whatever you heard on PalTalk…that’s weird. Because I was talking and I let go of the Ctrl button, then about 5 seconds passed and one of the “Historical Landmark” signs (huge signs in front of my house because we live in front of a water tower built in 1925, thus a “landmark” and visited by tourists etc) was torn off by the wind and slammed against the computer room wall which faces the street (I was on the downstairs computer). The wind force must have been amazing because it made a hole in the wall (you say you heard a crash? If you did you must also have heard my scream, but it’s weird that you heard anything at all since I wasn’t holding down Ctrl). At the same time the light flickered and then went out. I immediately disconnected the computer and went to another room where my parents and brothers were (it was really late at night so it was pitch dark). We spent the next about two hours finding the flashlights, putting sandbags under the bottom floor doors, etc. The wind was very very strong, as was the rain, and the pool was overflowing even though we had emptied it to one-half before…the most unnerving sound in the world must be hurricane winds tearing trees out of the ground  A while later (must have been around 1am) we were forced to leave our house because the car was up to God-knows-where in water and it was dangerous to stay because of “severe flooding” (yay for living in one of the low-lying areas of Miami ) as the policeman with a bullhorn yelled at us over the wind, so we waded over and they took us to an already over-crowded shelter in Broward (at a middle school) with several other people from our street who hadn’t evacuated. On the way we found out that a man a couple of blocks down from our house, trying to get something from his car, had been wading when some of the electrical wires were blown over. He was electrocuted to death. All of this was only mentioned briefly on the local news. On the weather channel etc, which we watched from the shelter, it didn’t even mention Miami, probably because farther north they were getting a worse part of the storm. Yet the wind and rain and surf we got weren’t “nothing”. Well, I hardly slept the last two nights, impossible to at one of those shelters, crammed with crying kids and tired, worried, scared, frantic people arguing about the stupidest things. I ended up signing up to volunteer while I was there since I couldn’t stand just sitting there and spent the next…what was it…well, from Saturday morning until this afternoon rationing food and water and listening to the news and trying to break up petty fights between the people crammed together in the gym. Sigh. Worst time I ever had….well not really, but people seriously need to learn the phrase “emergency situation” and shut their mouths and be grateful for what they get and not spend 40 minutes yelling about someone else taking up “their space”. And now I’m back home and very happy. The wind is howling something horrible, but the rain has stopped for now, the flooding has gone down, our yard is destroyed but oh well what can one do. The power is back. The mango tree was torn out of the ground though . The water pipes are all broken and it would cost thousands to replace them but the former owners of the house said they’ll pay for it and take responsibility since they didn’t fix them after Andrew (’92) and gave them to us in that condition. So yeah…that’s my long rant on hurricanes. And then we come home, turn on the radio and first thing we hear is “South Florida, you better keep your shutters hammered on because the strongest, largest storm ever to form that far south, Hurricane Ivan, is making it’s way towards Florida.” I was about to collapse when I heard that. Or break something. A window would do nicely…but there’s enough broken stuff everywhere already. Wow, how I hate hurricanes.
