Could Someone Give Me A Reccomendation?

Hey guys.

What is the...

* most EXHAUSTIVE

* most AUTHORITIVE

* most ACCURATE

verse-by-verse commentary, background/culture commentary, cross-reference index, topical index, etc. For the WHOLE Bible?

The most important to me right now is basically the best Catholic Bible commentary out there. But I guess you could just start giving me the "Best Of's" for any genre you can think of within the realms of theology and apologetics.

See, I'm a bookworm and know all of these answers from a Protestant perspective. But now that I'm awaiting Confirmation I want everything to be solidly Catholic.

Oh, and while I'm at it, where can I get all the writings of the Doctors of the Church? Or is that even possible?

well I'm working on buying a St. Jerome Bible Commentary it's a huge book but it is completely awesome !!

There are several books on writings of the Church Fathers and the Doctors of the Church. I can't name any off the top of my head but I'll look around and get back to ya :)

Br. Augustino

Well as far as writings of the Doctors any reputable Catholic seminary should have a few sets... I am in the library at my sem and all the Doctors are right behind me.... as far as biblical comentay.... I would step carefully. Our sister, St. Collette is diggin on the St. Jerome biblical commentary, maybe it is different than the one I have.. In fact I HOPE it is different than the one I have. Maybe, St.C you have the older version. I am sure I have the new jerome biblical commentary. and it is not the best, but the most exhaustive thing out there...your other alternatives are not in one single volume. I am pretty sure of that, but I am open for correction if someone knows something better...

yes sir Br. Augustino the St. Jerome Commentary that I found is an older edition.

Zigga another awesome Commentary are the Navarre Commentaries. Sometimes you can find the New Testament collection in one single volume. If not they are always in their single volume form. :)

I want exhaustive, meaning it can't be a condensed or one-volume edition. I don't mind large investments when it comes to this kind of stuff, even if it takes awhile to save up...

The Naverro ones...do they have the complete Old Testament as well? And are they exhaustive as the Jerome one? And what's so bad about the new Jerome commentary vs the old one? Is there nothing officially approved as the staple for verse-by-verse commentary? I just don't want to put too much faith in something that has bad exegesis / hermeneutics...

what about other things, like a good concordance, topical bible, chain-reference (ala Treasury of Scripture Knowledge), etc? Like I said before, I own all the answers a Protestant should give...I'm looking for SOLID Catholic teaching.

Thanks for all your help. You guys are always a real blessing! = )

Commentaries

While an older orthodox commentary from the 1950s, called A Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture (Nelson Publishers) can sometimes be found, we are now starting to see new faithful commentaries being published. The best one is the Navarre Bible (Scepter Press). It is a work in progress from the University of Navarre in Spain. It has both the RSV and the Latin Vulgate, with commentary underneath from the Fathers, Doctors, the Magisterium and the writings of St. Josemaria Escriva, the founder of Opus Dei. So far the volumes of the New Testament (one per Gospel and collections of the epistles) are available, as well as some Old Testament volumes (Pentateuch, Joshua-Kings). Additionally, Ignatius Press has begun to publish the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible, individual NT volumes by orthodox scholars, including Scott Hahn. Sop, far the Gospels and Acts have been published. Both the Navarre Bible and the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible can be obtained from EWTN's Religious Catalogue, the publishers, and through most Catholic catalogs, distributors and bookstores.

The most widely used Catholic commentary is probably the Jerome Biblical Commentary, now in a 2nd edition. There is also a summary version of it. This commentary is the work of well-known Catholic Biblical scholars and is filled with articles on historical, archaeological, linguistic and other subjects useful for understanding the background of the Scriptures. The JBC is, therefore, a valuable resource for those seeking such information. However, the textual commentaries use primarily the historical-critical method, and thus must be read with discernment. The Church approves of the use of this method for the purpose of understanding the historical and literary foundations of the text (see Vatican II, Dei Verbum 11-13), but finds it an incomplete method apart from the Tradition. Scripture must be interpreted according to the analogy of faith, that is, in accordance with what God has revealed in toto, as taught by the Magisterium.

That may help you decide.

This site http://www.cmri.org/book-index.html is pretty good about reference books and Apologetics books.

the only ones i have personally used and can attest to are the verse-by-verse commentaries. however, the reviewers at amazon highly suggested the other works.
