War we can't win: Bush
By New York Correspondent PHILLIP COOREY
01sep04

PRESIDENT George W. Bush has declared the United States could not win the war on terrorism as Republicans gathered in New York to tout his response to September 11, 2001, attacks as the key reason to re-elect him on November 2.

"I don't think you can win it. But I think you can create conditions so that those who use terror as a tool are less acceptable in parts of the world," Mr Bush said in a TV interview.

The frank admission was jumped on by Democrat vice-presidential candidate John Edwards.
In a way, he's right. Terrorism doesn't become extinct, it goes dormant.
I think that was probably what he was getting at -- that it's not a conventional "once and for all" war.

I don't think he meant it in the "we will lose" sense. I'm willing to give explanations for his statements the benefit of the doubt, because Bush has never been known for being an articulate man. This is coming from someone "working to put food on your family."

John-Boy Edwards annoys me. What's more, the same people who criticize Bush for being too obsessed with terrorism, not being realistic, and not paying attention to anything else, of course are going to turn a 180 and say "uh! Yes! He's so stupid! Jeez! Of course we'll win!"

Morph, do you honestly believe we can actually destroy all of terrorism? That will be impossible as long as man lives, because man will always find ways to terrorize others. But we can severly limit the dangers of terrorism, and that is what George W. Bush is doing.

The media has jumped all over this because they took it out of context. The only defender of the context has been Sean Hannity.

People on the left will attack it. People on the right will defend it....

It's the same old crapola with everything in this election.

Morph, I respectfully do have to wonder -- you've claimed that you don't support either candidate and dislike what they both stand for, then why all the articles about Bush? Why not be balanced in your postings and have articles about both?

this just shows you that Bush isn't an ignorant redneck. He acknowledges the nature of terrorism, that being unconventional. So he is correct to say that we cannot 'win' since winning would imply the type of thing we saw at the end of WWII, i.e. formal surrender, laying down of arms, sanctions against a country. You can't do that to a band of insurgents. There will always be one more who wants to kill us all.

He's been asked this before, and still hasn't answered it.

At any rate, war in general is a tragedy. I wont support any war ever, even if the often hyped intentions are rational. So far between 11723-13730 civilians have been killed directly because of this war. That's a sad fact.

I know there's also the abortion stats which are very sad too. What is it? Like 40, 000 unborn babies are victimized by abortion ever year? Now I know that lots of people will use this as an argument to support Bush, but he's been in power for 4 years, an entire term...and is abortion any less a threat then before he was in power? Maybe I am just misinformed, what steps has he taken to stop abortion?
