ThomasPeter
i was reading a post just now on bilbles and it brought to mind a question. why are there Catholic bibles titled with words like "revised" ? i what revision is going on? and why is it "new" or "standard" ? finally, why not just a straight translation from the Vulgate? any help.... helps haha. thanks tom
BLAZEr
Bibles are usually named by the group that translates them. For example, the Bible Schools at Douay and Rheims produced the Douay-Rheims bible which was originally in French then translated into English. Some bibles are translated from the Vulgate (like the Knox and Douay versions) but others are translated in different ways, from the Greek or Hebrew texts, using the Vulgate as a guide, etc. The Standard Version is also known as the King James. The Revised Standard Version was an attempt to fix some of the errors in the King James Bible. The American Bible Society created a translation of the Bible into English that was pretty weak, the New American Bible was the attempt at fixing those problems. The problem with a straight translation from the Vulgate is that you still run into the problem of how to translate certain words.
