A Horrorific Experience I Just Had...

Earlier today I thought it would be a good idea to go outside in the rain (Tropical Storm Gaston is currently hitting us) and take some pictures. I put on my jeans, boots, a rain jacket, and my digital camera. There are some parts of our driveway where it's literally flooded (our driveway is a quarter mile long). At the middle section of our driveway, is a large drainage pipe that is buried under it. Well today because of this tropical storm the water is pretty high on one side, it actually has covered the pipe itself (the water is about a foot deep). While on the other, the water is draining out like a rushing river.

So while I'm out there taking pictures, many of them I'm bending down to the ground, laying on the ground, and even having my boots under the water. I noticed three little crickets crawling on a strand of grass, trying to avoid the water, which I thought was interesting. Later on, went to try to get a picture when I noticed a pretty dang big blackish-purplish-blueish-with some whitish spider. I'm guessing it was about 4 inches in diameter (including the legs). It was avoiding the water and trying to crawl to the higher patches of grass.

We have a gravel driveway that now has grass growing down the center of it, so the gravel areas are were the tires now drive over, for those who live out in the rural area, you know what I'm talking about. So considering the grass inbetween is pretty thick and tall, it also created two small rivers where the gravel/stone is. So when I saw this spider, I went to try and pick up some large gravel stones to kill it. However, while looking at the water closely, I noticed a bunch of big, dead, white slugs/worm looking things. Then at that point I thought to myself "I better head back to the house".

Now the horrific experience...

I don't know why I didn't notice the dead bugs underwater before, but now I did. So before I was about to head back home - I saw a large, brown wood spider on my leg. It as about 4 inches as well (including the legs), it as already almost half-way up my leg (right below the knee). For those who don't know, I describe myself as an Indiana Jones who despises spiders instead of snakes. I like the outdoors and adventure, but I hate spiders! I have a major fear of spiders.

So when I saw this large sucker slowly crawling up my leg (good thing I was wearing long jeans), I yelled the F-word several times while trying to take the camera off from around my neck. Not to mention hopping on one leg, while raising the other with the spider on it. It took several seconds to take it off, considering I had a hat plus a jacket hood over it. By the time I finally got the camera from around my neck, I threw the digital camera at the dang thing (I wasn't going to dare miss). Direct hit! I picked the camera back up and quickly ran back to the house as fast as I can. While running I searched my body to see if I have anything else crawling on me, taking off my jacket and such.

My younger brother (Joshua) was zipping up his jacket to join me outside in the rain, when I ran up onto the back porch and told him about my experience. Well considering I was wet, I asked Josh to search me. I was so paranoid, I even had him search me while I took each piece of clothing off.

I was relieved, yet still creeped out. But to make things worst... I discovered that the digital camera would not activate when I tried turning it on. When I threw the camera at the spider, it fell half-way into a puddle of water. I was devistated, considering it's not my digital camera... but my dad's. I told my mom, she thought it was funny (about me freaking out like that) because she could picture the scene in her head in a comedic way (now thinking about it, it must've looked funny). She had a talk with my dad about it. Fortunately (thank God) he wasn't very upset, but chuckled at my situation outside with the spider. I still feel terrible though, because I already have a problem trying to not feel like a clumsy idiot. I have no idea why I didn't try using my hat or my other boot to get it off, maybe I was afraid that it would jump on my other leg or something.

Hopefully maybe if the camera dries out it'll work, but I doubt it. And that is my story for today.

daddy long legs aren't true spiders ;) They are Opiliones which is an order in the Class Arachnida, true spiders are in the order Araneae in the Class Arachnida
I hate everything you can't eat. Spiders, roaches, leeches, etc.
Well you can eat them, but I wouldn't advise it.

Just had another mental image, of a scout trooper (like in my avatar) freaking out if a spider was on his leg.
