Scofizzle
I had read in my friend's online journal that some Vatican officials are arguing over whether a girl actually received Holy Communion or not, because the Communion wafer was not wheat-based. She was allergic to wheat-based wafers and they would have made her sick so they gave her a rice-based wafer. And now there's some debate over whether she received Holy Communion. Did she really receive the Body? What could/should the Church do in a situation like this? And what if she had been allergic to grapes, what could be an "alternative" to the wine? Thanks. Noel's angel
this question has come up a few times, if u look at some of the threads, ull see what everyone thinks, but technically for the communion to be valid, it has to have wheat, she could have taken the blood instead, making the communion valid, but her mother refused. i think im right, but ud better check the other threads, just in case, hope i helped
lifeteenchick527
if she doesnt have to serious of a problem eating wheat based food...since a lil piece of the host is put in the wine...she could receve the MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS, bc she will still be recieving the BODY, BLOOD, SOUL, AND DIVINITY OF JESUS. and if she is allergic to grapes alone she can still recieve the BODY OF CHRIST, and she will be still recieving THE BODY, BLOOD, SOUL, AND DIVINITY OF JESUS. if she is alergic to both...iam not sure wat you would be able to do...sry

peach_cube
NO wheat= not valid, however the girl still could have recieved the Precious Blood for a valid communion, but her Mom didn't "want" that. My Aunt has a severe wheat gluten allergy, when she recieves it is usually with a low wheat variety. She has no problems. If one is not available, she usually recieves anyway, seeing that all it causes is an extra "run" to the bathroom a little later. Which she says is a small price to pay. Of course the girls mother has her convinced that if she consumes one communion wafer she "will die". As far as being allergic to grapes, I think that would be extremely unlikely, however the person would just recieve under the species of bread. In the extremely rare case that a person is allergic to both, I would say go with the low wheat communion, and offer your discomfort up to Jesus. You are only required to recieve once a year. Noel's angel
true, but what if the reaction to both was very severe?
Aloysius
i don't think there is anyone like that, so that question's irrelevant
MichaelFilo
Take anyways. There is a big problem in that people seem to think that the consequences for receiving the Body and the Blood with certain allergies outweighs the spiritual benefits. This is hardly the case. If receiving communion meant death, then better to know I died receiving Life itself. God bless, Mikey

I'd rather be like the woman who has to make an extra trip to the restroom than never receive Our Lord!
