daugher-of-Mary
There have been some problems in my parish concerning girls serving at the altar (in the Byzantine Rite this is an abuse, since our Bishops have not asked for dispensation from the CCL as the RC Bishops did.) I'm working on talking to my pastor right now, but he's been at this parish for over 30 years now and isn't likely to take a 16-year-old seriously. Should I take it to the Archbishop? Also any tips for talking to my pastor without seeming self-righteous would be great appreciated. -_-
daugher-of-Mary
Apotheoun, Since I asked you about this, I found that the particular law for Ruthenian-Byzantines does forbid women from serving. Canon 707 §l §8. Women are prohibited from serving at the altar. I knew it was here somewhere.
MichaelFilo
When? Always. Keep the faith clean. Keep is an active verb. God bless, Mikey
Thy Geekdom Come
I don't know much about the Eastern Rites, but I would do whatever it takes to change it, especially if it's illicit. Be kind and charitable, of course. Sometimes people just have to be approached. If he won't take care of it, go to the Archbishop. I want to go to a Byzantine Rite Mass someday...just to see what it's like...
phatcatholic
the pastor of your church may be more receptive and open to the associate pastors that work with him. so, maybe you could talk to the other priests of your church or the members of your church council responsible for faith formation or the liturgy.
There are no associate pastors. Unfortunately, in the East there really is a "vocation crisis". At the moment, I think we have 1-2 seminarians for the entire US. However, I did meet a delightful priest last weekend from my Archeparchy who I think can help me out with this. The Liturgy is just too beautiful to mess with! phatcatholic
1-2 seminarians for the entire US! woh!! well, what about other church officials? do you have a church council? i hope i'm not portraying my ignorance of eastern rights w/ these questions. if you have anyone in your church that works often w/ the pastor, he may be receptive to what that person has to say. if there is no such person, then you'll have to talk to him yourself. when you do this, i think the key is to approach it as a student who wishes to learn. say things like, "father, i thought things were supposed to be like this? can you help me understand why they are different?" what was Apotheoun's advise? let us know how things go.... pax christi, phatcatholic
