carrdero
Many authors and artists have tried to depict this place through their talents but any ideas that PM members have would be more than welcome.
CatholicCrusader
Hell as defined by the Church is a place of both pain of sense (fire) and pain of loss (loss of God). The latter punishment is worse than the former. In Hell each man is given his just punishment, which he is due. Each is repayed according to the gravity of his sins. He who has commited the worst sins is punished most, continuing up to those who commited no actual sins but died in the state of Original Sin unbaptized. These souls (either infants or mentally retarded, etc. who never reached an age of reason) suffer least. The Church has never defined but does allow for the belief in Limbo. The said souls who died in Original Sin only would descend to Limbo where they would be spared the pain of sense. Of course, they would still have the pain of loss, but some hypothesize that because they do not have an intellect to understand God, they do not understand or suffer from this punishment; therefore, they reside in a state of natural happiness. If one rejects Limbo (which he may do, since it is not defined by the Church but is the only merciful and logical option), one would have to hold that souls who die in Original Sin alone would be punished in Hell with the other souls, merely receiving the least punishment of any others. No one can doubt the fact that the unbaptized go to Hell, as the infallible ecumenical Council of Lyons II declared: "The souls of those who die in mortal sin or Original Sin only descend immediately into Hell, to be punished with different punishments." One can take different punishments to mean Limbo vs. Hell or in merely differing degrees of punishments, which is how men who have reached the age of reason are punished (according to their deeds). This is not an "opinion" of a PMer. This is the infallible declaration of the Church on Hell and Baptism. Aloysius
I would like to add that another option for a faithful Catholic is that the DOCTRINE of inculpable ignorance may apply to some of the unbaptized if they never had a chance to get baptized, and since a baby such as that has never had the chance to commit sin the effects of a desire for baptism (which are the same effects of baptism, see the Council of Trent) may apply and heal their soul from their state of original sin. JP2Iloveyou
yes, it is important to note here that there is such a thing as "Baptism of Desire" and "Baptism of Blood." If an unbaptized person dies, but he or she fully desired to be baptized, that person, throught he infinite mercy of Jesus Christ, can go to Heaven. The same is true of a person who is martyred for the faith but was not baptized. This was much more common in the early Church than today I imagine, but I don't have stats to back it up. Also, this is just my own pondering, but I read somewhere that a pope said that hell is not a place, but a state of being. It is a state of eternal separation from God. I could be way off base here, so please don't take this as doctrine. But, suppose that is the case. There is quite a bit of evidence for it. Satan is completely powerless to create anything. Only God can create. Since God is infinite love and goodness, it doesn't seem to make sense that he would create a physical place such as hell. The counter argument for this is that God is also infinite justice and justice demands that the wicked be punished for their sins. One possibility that I thought of was perhaps hell is a place created by God but never intended for the purpose it is currently used for, for example the center of the earth. NOTE: THIS IS COMPLETELY MY RAMBLING. THIS IS NOT THE TEACHING OF THE CHURCH, AS FAR AS I KNOW. PLEASE DO NOT ACCEPT THIS AS DOCTRINE.
MichaelFilo
God threw Satan into hell, therefore, God created hell. God bless, Mikey
