Brother Adam
I think my address is on the Catholic "spam" list. I'm getting "Catholic" mail from organizations all over the place soliciting money. It is almost "Binny Hinnish". "God will so abundantely bless your life if you would just bless our organization with any monotary donation" I don't know how I got on this list, but I'm not too happy about it. luciana
If you've donated to an organization that sold your name to other charities, then you're done for. I give to charities, only good, orthodox ones I trust, but I didn't always and I guess even the good ones have to make money and selling addresses helps. I also subscribe to some Catholic magazines which probably also puts me very high on the "send me tons of mail list"
MorphRC
I didnt know they did that!
luciana
It's nothing bad really. They figure if you give for one good cause you'll give for another, so they ask each other for their mailing lists. I'm a teacher and I receive mail from teacher colleges, teacher supply catalogs, and other education-related places not because I gave them my name, but because they found out I teach from one company or education magazine and then it spreads. In the US this is so normal. There's a place you can call/ write to that takes your name off of advertisers list, but I don't think that applies to charities. That cuts down on the amount of junk mail.
ryanmeyersmusic
most have privacy information listed on their mailouts, if over the phone you should ask them for it. Given the type of material that gets propogated with sold lists of information, no Catholic charity should contribute. Plus it's just messed up. Sursum Corda
If you call one of the places that you've received mail from, I think they are required to tell you where they got your name and address from. Also, you can request/demand that they take you off the list...although, you might end up with cool address labels from one of those charities
Norseman82
I've been cataloguing all the "I need money" letters I get. Some organizations I know I get monthly letters from. But, since Sept. 29, 2003, I've gotten 149 letters of either "I need money", subscription requests, conference invitations, etc. And I hate to say this, but the most cowardly organization I've seen in the "I need money" letters I receive is Catholic Answers, simply because on a lot of their various appeals they do not put a return address on the outside of their envelopes. homeschoolmom
All right, I confess... I sold your name and addy... I needed the money... I was going to send you a solicitation, but that seemed pointless... so, I sold it... You will soon be getting a flood of junk mail from well, literally thousands of places... and thanks for funding our homeschooling endevors...
