Dave
Does anyone here like to refer to their middle finger as their bird finger? I do! I try never to use it for that, of course, but I just think "bird finger" sounds funny!
Mrs. Bro. Adam
Nope... just refer to it as the finger between my index and ring fingers
Ash Wednesday
Where did the term "flip them the bird" come from, anyway? How did it first become called the bird finger?
Dave
Where did the term "flip them the bird" come from, anyway? How did it first become called the bird finger?
I just call my middle finger my bird finger because that's the finger one uses to give someone the bird. So if anyone calls the middle finger the bird finger it's because that's the finger used to give someone the bird. As for how the gesture and expression came about, I have no idea. Andrea348
I refer to it as the middle finger, but at daycare when we sing "Where is Thumbkin?" that finger is called tall man

Pete-ster
Its the middle finger, but the particular gesture in question is the "universal sign of contempt for another's driving ability".
Pete-ster
Oh, and instead of actually using said gesture, my brothers, friends, and I say "you have something on your face". We used to point to our chins using the finger in question, but now the phrase has become synominous, so the remaining gesture would be superfulous. (We used that manner to avoid the wrath of the authority figures)
