I am by no means an apologist, and a question regarding body modification often comes to me from my teens. how does the church feel about things such as piercings and, more importanly, tatoos.

This is not a black and white issue. Although tatoos and piercings are unnecassary and not necessarily "goods" they are also not "evil". They are more neutral, however in excess they can be a serious problem and excessive ornamentation of the body is to be discouraged.
