remnant
Praised be Jesus Christ! If you are Non-Catholic and read this please take the time to reply. I am a Catholic youth director and we are talking about Salvation (Faith & Works) this Sunday, I do not want to misrepresent any Non-Catholics view on the subject. Your info will be very helpful in giving our youth truth rather that a misconception. Please answer the following questions in your reply by Sunday. What state and city are you from? What denomanation are you? How does one attain Salvation? What role does Grace, Faith and Works play in Salvation? Do you believe in once saved always saved? If so, can you briefly explain? What role does Sanctification play (working out your salvation Phil 2:12) What do you think about the Roman Road? Do you know what it is? Does your church use it in witnessing? Does your church for the most part share your believes on the above? I know this is a lot, but I would appreciate honest answers to the following and anything else that you would like to offer to our youth. May God Bless you, in Him, with Him, through Him, matt

mulls
What state and city are you from?
Stratford, CT
What denomanation are you?
I do not hold steadily to any particular denomination, I believe in the universal church of believers. But for now I attend a church that would be classified as a Bretheren Assembly, it's a very small church, part of a network of other small, local churches. Read the end of Acts 2 to see a similar model. Each church is independent, but are connected in the network of other assemblies.
How does one attain Salvation?
As Jesus told Nicodemus, you must be born again. Admit that you are a guilty sinner, with no righteousness of your own. Admit that you owe a penalty for sin, but cannot pay it on your own, and call on Christ, believing that he took on your sin, died in your place, and rose from the dead. Ask God for forgiveness through Christ (repentance) and for Him to come into your life and change it. It is an act of the will, and an act of faith, based on the grace of God. That's how once experiences the new birth.
What role does Grace, Faith and Works play in Salvation?
It's is God's grace that saves us, which we can only respond to through our faith. We are credited Christ's righteousness when we have faith in Him to forgive us. We cannot attain this righteousness of ourselves (i.e. works)....it cannot be earned, it is given as a gift. We can't do anything to make God love us any more or any less than He already does. He provided Christ because of His love for the world. Once you begin to abide (live in) in God's grace, you will live by the Holy Spirit, which will begin to produce fruit in your lives...that's where works come into play.
Do you believe in once saved always saved? If so, can you briefly explain?
I really hate that expression. Yes, I do believe in the security of my salvation. I believe that God has a firm grip on my life, and will never let go, even if I try to wiggle out of it. God is more faithful than we are. The bible admonishes us that we must endure to the end, which we will only because of the Lord. 2 Tim 2:13 "if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself." I'm am in Christ, and Christ is in me. Even if I leave Him (which I will never), He will never leave me.
What role does Sanctification play (working out your salvation Phil 2:12)
We become more and more Christ-like in our walk with God, if we abide in Christ, by the Spirit. This is as much a responsibility on our part, as our right. If we do not produce fruit as a Christian, we are wasting our time and the new life that God has provided. We need to be seeking the Lord always, praying, worshipping, reading the Word, witnessing, giving, and displaying Christ-like characteristics. It is only because of God that we are able to do these things, because all of our hearts our evil....but we gained a new birth and a new life because of Christ. The more we abide (I love that word) in Him, the more we allow Him to work through us, and the more fruit we will produce. You provided noted Phillipans 2:12 in your question, so I will not quote it, but I will provide verse 13 which says "for it is God who works in you to will and to act accoring to his good purpose." Paul admonishes the Phillipans to continue to be obedience and let God continue to work through them. "Working out" there salvation does not mean earning it, but rather exercising it, "to perform, accomplish, achieve" in the Greek. Christ has already pain the penalty and forgiven the sin to those who have believed, letting Him do work in you and through you is the manifestation of it.
What do you think about the Roman Road? Do you know what it is? Does your church use it in witnessing?
I've never heard of this. Maybe I know about it, and just never heard this term before. Not sure.
Does your church for the most part share your believes on the above?
Yep.
I know this is a lot, but I would appreciate honest answers to the following and anything else that you would like to offer to our youth.
My pleasure. I would just encourage your youth to give up EVERYTHING to God, because there is absolutely nothing that the world can offer them. Christ is everything....once you begin to live for Him alone, you will begin to understand what Christ meant when he said " I came that they may have life and have it abundantly" John 10:10. There is NOTHING more exciting than to live for God and be used by Him. I thank God for the life He has given me, for the challenges I face with my friends and family, that he has equipped me fully with His Holy Spirit to face these challenges, and that I can have an eternal impact on this world, all for the glory of God. Praise the Lord!! Edited August 25, 2004 by mulls

mulls
ah, you see I once was Catholic, for 19 years in fact. if it were up to me, I wouldn't have left everything that I was comfortable with, but the Lord got my attention and called me out of my comfort zone. and as for going to "His" house.... 48 "However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says: 49 'Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. What house will you build for Me? says the Lord, Or what is the place of My rest? 50 Has My hand not made all these things?' Acts 7:48-50 it's a church thing, not just a Catholic church thing, but a catholic church thing.
