The term "Son of man," occurs in Ezekiel over 90 times throughout his book, most of the time appearing in the first line of every chapter. For example:

The Book of Ezekiel

2:1 Son of man, stand up! I wish to speak with you.
3:1 He said to me: Son of man, eat what is before you; eat this scroll, then go, speak to the house of Israel.
4:1 As for you, son of man, take a clay tablet; lay it in front of you, and draw on it a city (Jerusalem).
5:1 As for you, son of man, take a sharp sword and use it like a barber's razor, passing it over your head and beard. Then take a set of scales and divide the hair you have cut.

And it continues. But what does the actual term refer to?

'Son of man,' is Ezekiels way of seperating him from God in concern with the prophecies, it stresses that the message Ezekiel is preaching and spreading is not his own, but from God. Also due to the judgment theme in Ezekial, he found it necessary to distinguish himself and God, for who will be doing the judgements.

The NJBC sums up the term 'Son of man' as a statment that: "..judgment and delieverance lie in God's hands not ours."[1]
