stagefairy
The role of women. Big misunderstandings here.
Aloysius
the majority of these issues cannot be debated WITHIN THE CHURCH anyone who argues against the Church's teaching on things like abortion are not truly within the Church
Spiritual_Arsonist
All the aboves "issues" are good topics. But as it was just pointed out, MOST CANNOT BE DEBATED BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT CONTROVERSIAL, only controversial to those who cannot accept the teachings. Lil Red
here's the thing: i want to prepare myself for a class i signed up for the next 2 years (one weekend each month). because i know my diocese, i want to be prepared for anything (proof-wise) that they might throw out us, trying to teach as fact, when i know it's not. so i'm looking for a short list of things to bone up my apologetic skills about. Ash Wednesday
I'd also be prepared for the issue of authority and infallibility because a lot of those other issues mentioned boil down to this -- teachings on artificial contraception, abortion, gay chastity, in-vitro fertilization and euthanasia -- are morally binding and require assent. When I've been in debates with Catholics that don't agree with Church teaching, it usually comes down to what they believe to be worthy authority to follow. In other words, some of the doctrine "makes sense" so they accept it, but some they do not because they simply "disagree" -- they do not accept that such teachings came forth with binding authority inspired by the Holy Spirit. In a way, it's like they don't believe the Catholic Church to be the church founded by Christ. Dissenters believe Christ founded "some kind of church" but they don't understand that it is a concrete and visible church with Peter as the first Pope. So authority apologetics are good, even for fellow Catholics. Good luck! :wavey:

StColette
I'm not sure if this would really be a debate issue but one that causes some to be a little confused is Faith and Works. Understanding the Church's teaching on that is sometimes confused.
marielapin
Marriage and Divorce. I actually had to explain to a fellow Catholic (who goes to Mass every Sunday) why it is important to get married in the Church and why you should follow the Church teachings on contraception, etc. Remember that thread that was started that had the awful story of a Catholic woman who divorced her husband, and then remarried? She was away from the Sacraments because she knew her first marriage was valid, then eventually fell away from religion altogether. Then she started to despair. Its important to educated people why divorce is wrong and why its not something up for debate. There are only certain cases where it is a good thing.
