Thy Geekdom Come
Okay, so my new roommate asked me how to get to the Church for Mass tomorrow (I was like "Yes, a Catholic!"), but then he mentioned that he's "not one of those guys who goes every holiday or something." I gathered from the tone that he meant he goes to Mass only when he feels like it. Do I just pray silently for his conversion? Plant a green scapular somewhere? I can't confront him and say that he has to go every week...that will turn him farther away! What to do, what to do...
Ash Wednesday
Welcome to my family. I love them all so dearly. But to them, and a lot of Catholics, missing Mass just isn't a big deal and to state otherwise is archaic, old fashioned, "pre-vatican II", uptight, and "boy, that's pretty 'religious' isn't it?" Definitely be praying always, and living by example. When I'm in those sticky spots I try to pray and wait for the right time, you know...and get to know the person in the meantime. At some point it could come up in discussion. It doesn't mean they will listen or agree with what you have to say, but I would keep praying for them in any case. Oftentimes I feel like that's all I can do. I should try the green scapular, myself. That's a good idea, too. I've never been one to beat someone over the head right away -- I'm horrible at confrontation. But that's along the lines of how I try to go about doing things. I'm trying to become less afraid to confront people when need be, but I do believe in choosing battles wisely at the same time. *praying, praying, praying for souls, especially lapsed and lukewarm Catholics*
homeschoolmom
Example, example, example... just pray and be faithful. Maybe he would go more often if he sees your example. On the next HDO invite him to come with you and if he says "no" dont' make a huge deal of it. Maybe he'd LIKE to be one of those people who goes every week and holiday, but he's maybe never met one... (once he sees that it's more than little old ladies who go to mass weekly or daily, he'll feel more comforable...) Oh and pray often... (he's probably ripe for the picking...)
amen! be the example, teach, encourage him, after everymass share with him what the homily is/was, etc. oh yeah and invite him everytime. but i think to start off your example will speak louder than words to him.
St. Francis is one of my absolute favorite saints, so I've been trying to live that more and more lately, but I'm not sure that I can get him to go to Mass without actually talking about it...maybe get him to act better, but go to Mass, I'm not so sure... Well, he'll definitely see that they're not all old ladies here... I think the one thing that would attract him is knowing that I go to daily Mass (which he knows, because my other roommates have just noticed my well timed absences, etc.) and seeing the confidence and contentment that I and the other daily Mass Catholics at the Newman Center have...maybe he'll realize that he's missing something and realize that we have it... Lil Red
my favorite argument (and i'm not saying to say this to him): Imagine if people talked about eating the way they do going to Mass. "I only need to eat once a year." "It's not that big a deal if I don't eat." Ridiculous, huh? But going to Mass is just as important as eating!! Thy Geekdom Come
My work is cut out for me...the priests homily today was about when he came to college here 22 years ago and was asked by a friend to go to weekday Mass with him. He was like "why would I want to go to weekday Mass?" And he was a nominal Catholic, etc. and then he saw how many people his own age were at the 10 pm weekday Mass and he was converted and now he's the priest! Praise God! Mysterious ways...
My roommate didn't go to morning Mass. He's going this evening, but it will be the same priest and I asked and he told me that it would be the same homily. It was a very good homily...lasted about 20 minutes, but everyone seemed wide awake for the whole thing.
